Curious if anyone else is still running the EE20?

I have been running mine for a few years now without much drama, but I know of a few others who have jumped ship. I live at sea level so have not experienced some of the issues others have when going to elevation(and getting flat bedded home) As I understand it the Specialist Components ECU, first used by Boxeer and then small car had a fatal flaw. It was designed for a boat! Hence, it has no accommodation for adjusting for elevation changes. This is not a small deal and seems to have been a serious oversight in the development of this swap. I have seriously been considering abandoning this swap and moving on to the FAS TDI kit. I would never do business with Boxeer based on the problems with this product and current issues with the most recent offering. Before, I pull the trigger, I am wondering if anyone has changed ECUs or found other solutions to the problems that go along with this swap.

Greg took this engine all the way to Patagonia. What elevation issues are you talking about? I know of start up issues during cold weather.

True...but not with the Typhoon ECU. He later switched to the Bosch ECU because Small Car got exclusive rights to distribute the Typhoon. If you have the Bosch you are probably fine, but if you have the Typhoon that issue exist. I have talked to a couple people who have experienced this issue. Most ECUs compensate for elevation as the Air becomes less dense. With the Typhoon, you could change the settings manually, using the software and a PC but that really doesn't help if you are traveling up to Tahoe or Mammoth and back.

It might be worth talking to Greg to see if he has an ECU or a used ECU? Cheaper then pulling the engine all the way out for a swap.

82 Volkswagen Vanagon Subaru Diesel Won't Start Price: 7500
I am selling my 82 Vanagon Westfalia. I've bought it in April but I no longer have the time for it anymore. It has a Subaru EE-20 Diesel conversion done by smallcar in 2015. The engine has around 20k miles on it and the body has 110k. The van isn't starting right now but somebody told me it is most likely the battery. I also just replaced the brakes and installed a new power brakes system in the van. It has many other upgrades as well. A couple weeks ago the van wouldn't turn over so I'm selling it for 7500 to whoever wants it. Price is firm.

Intersting, This could be a very good deal for someone that wants one of these

Pros:
Subaru EE20 Conversion
New Power Brakes (Just got done)
New Brake Rotors and Pads
16" Wheels
Go Westy Steel Plate Bumpers
Rear Tire and Shelf Swing Away
Truck Fridge
Truck Mirrors
Light Bar
100W Solar Panel
Propex Heater
Pioneer Aftermarket Stereo with Back Up Camera
ABS Front Interior Panels
Power Windows
Fiamma 45S Awning
Yakima Roof Rack
South African Grille with Halo Headlights
Side Ladder

Cons:
The van has some noticeable rust issues. The underside has some rust (as is normal or California vans) but the exterior needs some work. There is seam rust in several places on the van (as shown in pictures) and the spot behind the sliding door needs body work .
Transmission needs to be re-geared.
Needs new aux batteries. The lead acid ones inside are completely non functioning.

That van has been through several people and resold several times with the price falling each time. The conversion was an issue last I heard in the rumor mill.

If it were as simple as battery, wouldn't you just put a battery in it?

With all the rust and corrosion showing in the pictures on the body and engine aluminum components I suspect the no-start issue is due to green creeping death corrosion in the electrical components and wiring for the engine.

100% my thoughts too. sounds like there is something more evil going on but honestly if the guy is fed up with it and you showed up with dead presidents you can probably get it a bit cheaper and either fix it or part it.

were it local to me, i may consider it.

ScottShelley Thu Jan 13, 2022 8:42 am

I looked at this in person a couple months ago and I know the previous owner.

You would have to pay me to take it away. Corrosion everywhere and it had no oil in the engine. It was parked on a sloped driveway and the driveway was covered.

still though... if the interior is in any sort of decent shape i still bet theres 5-7k worth of parts there assuming you were ready to completely dispose of it.

How many EE-20s are still in use. Roll call....

That looks like beach rust, like it lived on PCH.

Cool van though. I'd like that engine in my syncro

It sounds like that engine is more of a liability than an asset.

Humm..... well that's not what I was hoping for. O well, in good company!

You cant ever sell or get a new engine. I don't like to be alone :-)
