Hi All,
I have been posting a few bits and pieces in the last week. With winter coming up the beetle is coming off the road for a tidy up and a few additions. I have to drop the engine out to replace the clutch release bearing and I was going to have the tinware re-painted at the same time.
I was thinking about a Weber 34 ICT kit from these guys
http://www.dellorto.co.uk/merchandise/Carburetor_parts.asp?CategoryID=26&PartsectionID=115
Its currently a 1500 sp
large flow exhaust
009
Other than that its standard ..
Has anyone else gone down this road?
If so what are the pro's and cons?
Thanks,
Neil |

Those are too much carb for a mostly stock 1500/1600.... and they are dual ports??
Bigger dont mean better.
If you must use dual carbs to complicate the simple stock engine... use dual single 34's or Kadrons.
Pro's
More pep in the step
Cons,
Must remove carbs and intakes every time engine is removed
More tinkering
More fuel used
Clutters up the engine compartment.
Makes sparks plug replacement tight, or chop in access panels. |

I think he was talking about ICTs, which are singles. The picture on the linked Dellorto site shows bigger carbs, which is confusing. The link to the 34 ICT kit is lower on the left.
I'm no expert, but ICTs would probably do fine on that engine, as long as they were properly jetted.
Aircooled.net has a great guide for choosing carbs:
http://www.aircooled.net/vw-carburetor-options-selection-101/
If you get the carbs from Aircooled, they'll set them up for you with appropriate jetting, which will save you a lot of hassle and money. |

I'll check out that link. I mean if there's no benefit i'll not bother, I just wanted to see if anyone had ever used them on a 1500 single port |

I am getting ready to do the same thing on my sons 67, dual baby dells on single port manifolds. Keeps us posted on what you find out.
I am going to try to stick some 36 horse oil bath air cleaners on top for a kinda vintage performance look, I am sure there will be problems associated with that. Just got to find some single port dual manifolds now that arent more than I paid for the carbs.
Good luck. |

I did this, it works well and I like the look. Biggest issue is accessing the bolt that tightens them on as it ends up tucked away at the back at an almost impossible angle.

The 34 ICTs are a good match for a stock or near stock motor with good flowing exhaust. Be aware that once you get them on you may hear the motor stumbling on a couple of cylinders at idle. It sounds like the motor is missing. This is normal for twin carbs with single barrels feeding two cylinders. A larger balance tube helps but the ICT carbs come with a very tiny balance tube.
I've owned several sets of ICTs - they work good and are very drivable and often get as good or better mileage than the stock carb. |

I just went by your direct link. ..
The benefit.. is more performance.. if thats what you're after.
I have Dual Solex's 32's with a mild cam in my 67, runs very well. Its a noticeable improvement over stock performance, but does require more tinkering. |

Exactly what I was thinking Dangermouse! It looks great. What linkage did you use when you elimated the cross bar mount? |

CSP bellcrank linkage; nice, simple and well made - very little to go wrong with it. |
