Yes I've read the manual, yes, I checked the ring box, yes I looked at the install instructions on the slip of paper.
I bought Moresa P&C with Hastings rings. The two comp rings are different, and there is no indication which is the top ring.
One ring is silver, has a dot on it a small sideway cross, and no bevel.
One ring is dark gray, has a dot on it and a bevel notch on the inside circumference of the ring.
I know the dot is the side facing the piston face, but which ring is the first, and which is the second? I was thinking the ring with the bevel is on top. |

Your beveled ring should go on top. square ring next. as mentioned dot to the top gaps at 2 and 10 |

The dark grey ring with the bevel on the inside. Is the bevel on the top (same side as dot) or on the bottom?
If top then that's the top ring, if bottom then that's the second ring.
Bottom line is the bevel never faces up on the second ring only down. |

(Dot is always UP)

OK, slight update. The bevel is on the outside of the ring. I spoke with a guy that builds a lot of engines and his opinion is that the beveled ring is the second ring and the non-bevel is the top ring.
Also, I'm used to having the arrow on the piston crown fact the intake on a V8 or the center of the engine. I presume the arrow on my piston faces the FRONT of the engine which is the flywheel on a VW. |

You got it.
Silver face ring no bevel is top.
Grey ring outer bevel is second.
All dots up.
Yes arrows to flywheel. |

Thanks, but it's not explicit on which ring goes in which groove. This is what I have in the inst slip in the ring package:
Ring installation instructions are placed in every set of piston rings Hastings Manufacturing Company produces. These instructions should be read each time before the piston rings are installed on the pistons. Listed below are the general rules for the installation of various types of compression rings.
p62.gif (2646 bytes)Rings having a "pip" mark or dot on the side of the ring must always be installed with the "pip" mark or dot towards the top of the piston.
Rings with a bevel on the inside diameter but no "pip" mark or dot must be installed with the bevel towards the top of the piston.
Rings with a groove in the outside diameter and no "pip" mark or dot must be installed with the groove toward the bottom of the piston.
* Rings having no dots, bevels, or grooves can be installed either way.
It is a good idea after installing all rings on the pistons to recheck each ring on each piston for correct installation.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Note the lack of instruction on which ring to put in which groove. The orientation of the ring toward the top is there, but not which ring goes in which groove. |
