View original topic: Solex 28PCI - stuck check ball on accel pump
el_fela Mon Sep 02, 2013 4:54 pm

Hi all, my carb is giving me a lot of trouble. The accel pump is not pumping, and I'm almost sure the check ball between the float bowl and the accel pump is stuck (no fuel in accel pump compartment, and if you blow the hole there it comes out from above).

The brass pin is impossible to remove to me, so I'm attacking it with chemicals. Let me tell you, it's not working so far.
I'm going to try to move the ball with some wire and/or compressed air now. Any other ideas?

I'm not sure about the 28PCI specifically, but I did have to pull the brass pin on the side of one of my H30/31s to get that ball un-stuck. No chemicals would work.
The pin pulled out much easier than I expected.

Remove one of the screws that holds your parking light cover on and screw it into the brass plug and then pry it up. (That is assuming you have 62 or newer tail lights)

Sorry, I see you have a 28 PCI, the above is for PICT.

I just went through the same with my 28PCI, If you can plug where the channel is in the bowl and use compressed air below the ball. Remove the screw below the diaphragm area and blow there. That is how I got mine unstuck but I removed the brass pin and when I blew I lost the ball and had to make one. You are on the right track just keep on soaking it and it will eventually break free. Is your a Solex Like below.

The 28 PCI has two check balls-

After the top of the carb is removed, gently pull up the brass tube above the accelerator pump. A ball should be in there and come right out.
After taking the accelerator pump cover, valve diaphragm and spring out, the little brass pin on the lower left side of the accelerator pump area has to be pulled free and the ball shaken out of the same passage the first came out of

If really stuck in there I'd go at it with some carb cleaner and compressed air, shooting the air in so the balls go into a container.
If you cannot get the lower pin out, carb cleaner, compressed air choud do the trick- you can hear the ball rattle inside when it is clean.

The top ball is larger than the lower ball

Wow, so many answers! It seems the stuck ball is a common drama...
My carb is like the one on the picture, yes...

I tried to take out the brass pin on the accel pump compartment, but it started to break so I dessisted. The upper ball is fine.

Logic tells me that I should blow air from the fuel bowl hole, cause the ball is stuck in a no fuel flow position, right?

I'm feeling confident now, I guess it just takes some patience...
Thanks guys!

You can blow air in from both directions- the ball cannot go out the fuel bowel hole, and the brass pin keeps it in position. Give it a good soak in carb cleaner. I try not to poke at things like this with wires cause the body of the carb is not as hard as the wire is.

I got it fellows! I had struggle with the brass pin inside the pump compartment, but I finally took it off, then launched some carb cleaner, and after an hour or two, voila! The ball is there!
Sadly, the starter stop working when I tried to start it.... When one thing is fixed, another one breaks...

Thank you all!

Felipe

Hi all

The small pin came out easily for me and both balls seem to be stuck. What is a good way to get the upper brass pin out the top so that the balls can come out. I'm soaking the carb now,but couldn't get a good grab on the brass tip to pull it out.

Any suggestions will help out alot.

Thanks
Jason
