View original topic: .710 King pin reamer, who needs one? Page: Previous  1, 2, 3  Next

When I needed one, which was about five years ago when I rebuilt my '61 Beetle's front end, I looked high and low for a .710 piloted reamer locally.
Every machine shop buddy, everyone I knew who was a fabricator and everyone who might know someone got called upon, and everyone looked on my behalf.
Even had a guy offer to make one. Not one turned up.

I ended up buying a cheap adjustable reamer for $10 and a friend machined a pilot for the unit so that it could ream a dead-straight line through both bushings.
You had to kind of sneak up on the final dimension by increments, but it worked perfectly, and the end result was right on the money per the Bentley manual's specs.
I even heated the assembly in oil to the specified temperature, again per the Bentley, prior to insertion of the king pin, and measured the effort necessary to turn the spindle after the unit cooled, which fell within the limits spelled out by the Bentley.

What a pain in the neck!
I would have given a pinky finger at the second joint for a proper .710 piloted reamer when I needed it.

Keep an eye on ebay.
They come up for sale there quite often.

This is a great idea. I'm in the process of going through my 65's front end. Don't know if it needs to be done but everything else in this car needed work so best be prepared.

Called an aircooled shop in the big city just to see, stated it would take 4 hours at 90+ dollars an hour to press and ream the kingpin/bushing  . And wanted to use their parts. I get your running a shop but man! Can't I just give you my buddies first born?! :D

I'll just do it myself if needed.

Being on the "shop" end of things. The time consuming part is in the cleaning / prep. If someone brings me dirty greasy fresh off the car spindles, they need to pay for my time to do the cleaning. Bring me a set of disassembled, clean spindles and I'll press in the bushings, ream and assemble for $100.

No I get it, I'm sure it would be a stellar job. 100$ was exactly what I was thinking for me bringing in clean parts for assembly.

Its just business, I get it.

like the idea of "pass the reamer" lol

I'm with [email protected]'s an old post, but..... ..Is anyone renting a reamer out? Former VW Mech. (late 60' early 70's).... just don't want to spend $130.00 + S&H for a one-time use.

I'm needing to ream out my bushing and trying not to buy one if I dont have to. I know this is a old post but if anybody would like to rent out their reamer or even just do it if I send you the parts that would be great. Local place want $200 just to press in bushings and ream them out out. I can press them in that aint a problem.

Thanks

Nate

Ship me your carriers with the bushings installed and I'll ream them for you and ship them back to you at cost.

Thank

At cost, meaning you cover the shipping both ways. The reaming I'll do for free if the bushings are pressed in and ready to go.

Gabuggy Wed Dec 14, 2016 2:47 pm

I can handle the shipping. I can send a return label when I send the parts. If you wanna pm your address I'll send it out monday most likely. I really appreciate it. I can get this buggy back together after this.
