Good Evening, Everyone,

Can anyone recommend a competent machine shop in Maryland, Northern Virginia, Southeast Pennsylvania, or Delaware? In particular, I need some stock Type 1 cylinder heads flycut. Peak performance in Seabrook, MD has done this work for me in the past (and done a good job), but they are now gone.

I could ship the pair of heads to the West Coast, but shipping both ways is getting prohibitively expensive. I appreciate the advice.

Check with Jim's Custom VW's in Ohio.I used him for new lifter sleeves and he did a good job. I think he flycuts. There is another guy in the Charlotte area. I think he has an ad in the classifieds here. There is an outfit in Georgia that can do it. They have ads here too. Good Luck

Machine shops in general have been disappearing throughout the DC area, it seems. When I need to get some work done, I am going to try Gunther's in Walkersville, MD (http://gunthersmachine.com), but I can't find a single review or comment about it.

Try RockCrusher, he is located in PA and knows his stuff.

Not exactly north VA, but the machine shops around here are pretty good (Norfolk Area). B&L has been doing all my work lately and though they can be pricey, the job is always done right and up to my high (OCD) standards. They were able to make me parts for my Shorrock blower from scratch, and did a damn fine job. Here's the addy, in case you need to look them up:

Never used them. In SE Maryland.

You could try Nick at NS Racing (here on the samba). Bunch of folks have had problems with his timliness, but I did not. Very good machinist. He is in Dale City, VA.

I hear that Sean that used to run Peek Peformance is working out of his house on the eastern shore of MD, but I do not have contact information.

I've used with good pricing and turnaround time. No complaints, work was spot on what they said it would be

I'm interested in this too. Machine shops, let alone anyone who knows anything aircooled are disappearing in the north east fast. I have a few things I am going to need done for my next build I just scored on Craigslist.

Rockcrusher did some excellent work for me in the past, but he has been MIA for a wile. This thread just reminded me he had my xtra case cut for 92's. I would like that back. Sent an email to his address listed above......

Might be at the northern fringe of your area, but ValleyVWs (aka the VW Store) is near Hazleton PA, about half way up the state in the eastern quarter. Right near the junction of I-80 and I-81. Dennis has done at least 8 sets of heads for me, to bore for larger cylinders; and about half a dozen cases; to line-bore as well as bore for larger cylinders. No job ever took more than 4 weeks, which was OK for me since they have all been future projects. He also has a large parts store there.

I think Sean @Peek was still doing stuff. Not really sure where.

I can turn around the balance job or strictly machine/linebore work in short time but not engine builds-for awhile. Or tranny job for that matter.

I have ACLS this week or next so have minimal time but I can handle a linebore or flycut or balancing.

Engine jobs have gotten me in hot water in the past coz of delays so will not do that again.

let me know if I can help out.

I had all the machining work for a stock 40 hp engine done at C & M Auto Machine Shop in Alexandria, VA. I would use them again. I also had a good experience with NS Racing, also with a stock 40 hp.

So a missing state: New Jersey, bangslap in the middle of these areas. I'm looking for basic machine work on a stock Type 4 rebuild and all I keep finding are V8 shops or Rice Tuner shops, both of which snicker at something like an align bore. I live in Burlington County NJ and work in Bala Cynwyd, PA, so there is quite a range of area I'm will to go to...
