rebuilding my empi 34 pict - 3 carb and after cleaning with berrymans carb cleaner chem dip it has a white residue all over it.. i shouldnt have to clean the carb after i already cleaned it wtf! i soaked in the can overnight and then used the little wire bottle brushs to clean in all the passage ways and wash whit hot soapy water then it dried looking like the picture.. i rinsed the crap out of it so its not soap.. i used air compressor and blew through all ports and stuff to make sure they are clear.. not sure what to do, im very disappointed with berry

Looks to me like aluminum corrosion--due, perhaps, to the Berryman's. I just cleaned out my 34 PICT 3 (Solex) from W. Germany, using Berryman's in the spray can (I don't believe in soaking). No residue whatsoever. I also, blew everything out with my air compressor. I wonder if EMPI uses some other kind of metal in their carb bodies?

Even so, I'd use the car and not worry about the residue.

yeah, it's etched. Chemical a bit too strong for that carb

This stuff left my stock solex 34 pict 3 looking amazing.. maybe its a different metal?

Read the instructions on the can. I'm pretty sure it says NOT to soak overnight.

I got the same residue using spray Carb cleaner (autozone brand) and berrymans on solex and brosol carbs. It doesn't harm anything just take a lil wd40 on a rag and it goes away if the aesthetics of the Carb are bothering you. It annoyed me so that's what I did!

I even used anl ultrasonic cleaner and left the same residue. It doesnt affect anything.

I left it overnight, the thing came out looking better than new!

well it did the same thing to my bocar carb (mexican solex?).. im leaving that one tore down cuz if this carb fails the rebuild (my first carb rebuild btw) i can send the bocar as a core on a rebuilt one on ebay for $100.. i whiped it down with a rag and some penetrating oil but still unsatisfied cuz i cant tell whats little cooks and crannys..

I thought I read a post that Berryman's changed their recipe & that's one of the problems with the new stuff they're selling. Maybe the poster who had good results was using the older formula.

Q-Dog Sat Dec 22, 2012 10:23 am

They make different formulas, one of which they can not sell in California. The older formula is a solvent with a sealing layer floated on top to keep the solvent from evaporating too quickly. This information is on the Berryman website if you want more information about which formula does what.

And the recommended use, instructions and precautions are printed on every can. Some of these chemicals can be quite dangerous. Please read the instructions and use common sense around all chemicals and solvents. I would hate to see any Samba members get hurt from being careless with chemicals.

They used to sell a bright dip that restored the shine too. The chemicals that USED to be in the stuff SHOULD be illegal IMO, that's some brain melting evil solvents!
Lots of things not the same as they once were. The caustic stuff makes the lead plugs come loose too besides etching the surface. At the end of the day an ugly carburetor runs just as good as a shiny one. Cleaning it to death does more harm than good.
