Hey guys I have noticed a few pictures on here where people are running a multitude of different Hoosier tires, when I bought my rail the po had Hoosier tires on the rear and I love the look of them but after doing a once over of the entire rail I saw imprinted on the side of the tire that it says not for highway use... Now obviously people are using these on the street because I see street legal rails on here with Hoosiers on them
I find it highly unusual that even Hoosiers persay dot rated tires also say not for highway use... It's not exactly shocking as I know racing is always looking for a edge and some leagues require dot tires so Hoosier released a dot racing tire totally understood
Regardless of what Johnny law says I want to know what people say about these tires on the street any issues?
The main reason I am asking is because I have unlimited access to used treaded and slick Hoosiers used for dirt and asphalt circle track racing for free and I also have access to a tire mounter so I would have the tires I want for free for pretty much life of me having the rail...
Here is there warning I find on the Hoosier web page
WARNING: D.O.T. labeled Hoosier Racing Tires meet Department of Transportation requirements for marking and performance only and are NOT INTENDED FOR HIGHWAY USE. It is unsafe to operate any Hoosier Racing Tire including DOT tires on public roads. The prohibited use of Hoosier Racing Tires on public roadways may result in loss of traction, unexpected loss of vehicle control, or sudden loss of tire pressure, resulting in a vehicle crash and possible injury or death.
Lastly I understand your concern but please don't litter this page with reasons not to...
Thanks ahead of time |

Since you have unlimited access to these tires, have you ask the people who use them for racing what temp does the tire have to get to to work properly and how long do they hold air pressure.
Another is how long do they last before they are showing the cords.
If using them in the dirt how strong are the sidewalls, will they hold up to hitting rocks and other sharpe objects. |

Well these tires will be coming off of the right rear of a sprint car we are talking about a tire that on asphalt will last up to 100 laps on a 36 degree banking with an average speed of 140mph so as far as showing cords id say if i was able to get 500 miles on a set of scuffs i would be in good position and i am thinking more along the lines of on street vs off road
The only people i could ask is hoosier themselves and they have not done the testing nor would they recommend such use so they are useless |

The racing tires are built for a prepared surface, much smoother than your average street. The composition of the tread pattern isnt built to conform to a surface like a city street or an off road trail.
Sprint car tires are typically customized to the track surface with a set of grooves and sipes all to make that particular tire perform better given the currect situation. Since off road trails change so much, that customized tread pattern is all for not.
Also, sprint car tires are not steel belt radials, meaning that in the event of a puncture, that tire will seperate tread from sidewall almost immediately. Its bad news when one of those things comes apart, flinging huge rubber chunks not to mention the high likelehood of you loosing control of the car.
In my opinion, I dont think its a good idea. The decision is entirely up to you though. I think my $400 spent on road legal rear tires is worth the peace of mind. |

Im with you on that was not aware that sprint car tires did not have any cords that poses a serious problem then for sure...
I was looking at this reason for the size and cost of the situation that size tire in a dot rated actually rated for the road is 450 to 500 a piece... And that's probably because the only person i can find to stock such a size is Mickey Thompson and im sure im paying 50percent for the name as i am the rubber |
