As I was sitting here watching Top Gear(brit version) They were talking about top speeds so I began to wonder about the top speed of my 99.5 2.0. I went online and did a search and found all kinds of negative things or stories about adding all kinds of shit to the motor. I did find a video someone made to show their top speed and they stopped at about 110mph and I was very surprised. I have been up to 130+mph and still had more pedal but had to brake for a redlight. Back when I did that I told my buddy with the vw shop and he said I have one of the fast ones. From what he was saying some were dogs and others flew so I'm trying to find out how many fast ones are out there. If you have a 2.0 5spd manual let me know what top speed you have hit, be interesting to hear how many fastones are out there. Mine is a stock 2.0 with no mods at all and it has 124000 miles on it so I'm looking for top speeds of unmodded 2.0's if there's any out there let me know |

I find it a little hard to believe that a stock 2.0 hit 130mph. I once had my '92 corrado slc with a vr6 and 5 speed to 130 and i don't think it had much more in it. Probably could have hit 140 if i kept on it but not anymore. And a vr6 has a good 70hp more than a 2.0 |

Sorry if you find it hard to believe but it's true. I have no reason to lie about it and I will make sure to get some proof for the non believers and post it here. |

Don't know about the Jetta, but I know the speedos in all of my Passats overstate the actual speed compared to GPS speeds the higher they climb. I've seen 155 indicated in my W8, my garmin GPS and my cell phone GPS were both reading 149. The speedo error in my 00 passat 1.8T was even worse above 100. Both cars are/were chipped but that didn't seem to change as the error was there with/without the chipped ECU's on OEM size tires. |

So, lets just ignore aerodynamics for a second.
Fifth gear on all MKIV jetta 02j (trans codes EKH,EMS,EZK,FBV, DZQ,EBP,EGT,EKG) is 0.837. The ring and pinon is 4.235 and the tire height is 24.98" (standard 195/65/15) so at 130MPH you would be turning 6198 RPM. I hear that some cars had a 6400 RPM rev limiter.
I didn't want to beleive it at first but I guess its theoretically possible (If we choose to ignore a few variables) to do 134.2 MPH in a stock Jetta.
Still though, Pics or it didn't happen.... |

A good friend of mine got his 2.0 aba mk3 jetta to 140 at mid ohio. It is nearly stock, just a chip tune and a diesel 5th gear. |

I think 130 is possible. I did 75 in third with my 96 2.0 Jetta. I had the family 90 Carat 1.8L up to 110 on the Maine Turnpike. I had a 96 GLi VR6 Jetta up to 120 on a test drive once. Girl from VW wasn't too happy.. |

Iv'e had my '98 gti vr6 with a few minor mods to 100mph in 3rd gear before. It' kinda slow in the low rpm range but once you hit 4k you better watch out because it's like turning on a switch. |
