View original topic: Fuel inlet brass fitting came loose--best way to fix it?
mrdctaylor Fri Nov 16, 2012 4:16 pm

I've searched around and was wondering if there was a consensus on the best way to fix this issue. Basically, the brass fitting that comes out of the carb CAME out of the carb. :-) Is a little jb weld ok to use on this? Or is the safety wire idea best? I just want to do what is safest. It was a bit of a shock to have this come out and I was thankful there was no fire! It is a stock carb on my 1968 Beetle. Any advice is welcome--thanks!

JB Weld should work.

Or you can thread the hold and get a threaded fitting for it.

Sorry to be a little off topic, but is there supposed to be a barbed part of the tube? Mines just a smooth brass tube. Thats a little unnerving for me

As for the best solution, I second JB weld. I've used that on a lot of stuff and its great, just prepare the surface very well (IE get rid of gas and residue). I'd do the safety wire thing along with the JB weld just in case.

Straight brass tube. German hose works like "Chinese" hand cuffs and will grip the brass tube if you try to pull it off.

Thanks! I just redid all my fuel lines and wasn't sure if that was stock or someone hacked the end of the tube off .

Also, mrdctaylor, If the previous owner has put a fuel filter in the engine bay (especially between the pump and carb) REMOVE IT! unbolt your tank and mount one in the rubber line from the tank to the tunnel. A fuel filter in the engine bay is a huge fire risk. I just moved mine to a metal one under the tank.

Great! Thanks for the input. I will probably do both.

I no usee handcuffs...loctite red on the tube into carb and fuel injection line clamps on the hose

Clean it squeaky clean and use full strength locktite. Should be 2x stronger than epoxy if done right

I tapped the hole on the carb, threaded the brass inlet, then screwed it in with Loktite....it ain't coming out again.

A threaded fitting is best.
The ideal size is 1/16" NPT x 1/4" barb.

A good source for fittings is:
http://fittingsandadapters.com/malpiptap.html
their stock # MPT-4-1 is a 1/16" NPT X 1/4" barb.

If you need a tap, here's a source for that:

Keep on mind that the often illustrated safety wire between the carburetor top screw and a hose clamp might hold the brass tube in place, but it will do absolutely nothing to guarantee a seal between the tube and the carburetor. Fix it right and never worry about it again.

Good luck, Mondshine

Thread is old, but search works. Has anyone figured out a metric size fitting for this?
