I assume you are talking about the 73 super in your sig. What size motor.....what is your budget?

lorkai99 Thu Nov 08, 2012 2:35 pm

its a 1600cc dont really have a budget, just dont want to be speniding to much

"Best" is relative.

I feel the best value for price/quality are

http://vwparts.aircooled.net/VW-Sedan-Bus-Street-Header-1966-73-1300-1600cc-p/2031-10-2031-13.htm

and you have a lot of different muffler choices with it.

If you want a quiet muffler, then the single quietpack system is pretty good. I have that and it seems to run better and a lot quieter.

But this is just my opinion.

you have to decide how loud you want it, and what "look" you want. The Hideaway is quiet and awesome ground clearance. Quiet packs are more visible, but lose some ground clearance. Glass Packs are louder, and very "cool" with a retro feel. Everyone will know your car from a block away if you get a glass pack (I personally like them a lot). However I would not want to drive a car with a glass pack on a 6 hour drive.

i would like something with a muffler i want it to sound mean, if you know what im going at. i wouldnt mind that header but what good muffler could i get and i want something that is coated all over so i dont get rust including the inside! know any?

you need to be a lot more specific as to your needs and budget. Because you are in SLC you can pick it up here and save a lot of shipping costs. We are in Murray.

I've been looking at this Tri-mil exhaust for my 74 Ghia. I've met a couple other Ghia owners that have it - one guy with dual carbs and another with single carb. It's got the exact look and agressive sound I want. I noticed on your site, that you mention that the version with the heat risers is poorly designed. Can you elaborate on that? What exactly is bad about it?

I currently have this cheap chinese made EMPI exhaust on my Ghia:
http://www.mamotorworkstv.com/vw/product/gt-exhaust-system-single-tip_313264/
It was put there by the previous owner and is beginning to rust through. I can't imagine that the heat risers on this thing are any better than on the Tri-Mil. Do you think I'd see any negative impact on the performance of my car if I switched from this to the Tri-Mil?

BTW, I was planning on calling you guys today and asking about it, but got bogged down with work. Glad to catch you in this thread! :D

John,

Does that hide-out muffler that bolts up to that header fit a Ghia? This is the one I'm reffering to:

im in murray everyday, could i come by and see what you guys all have?

lorkai99 Thu Nov 08, 2012 8:37 pm

would you recomend this muffler or has it had bad reviews?

how about a big motor!!! a mean sounding stock 1600 isant very mean sounding.and a mean sounding header isant for a stock 1600 either.since you dont have a budget just order an engine&header form ac.net.Im sure they will get you just what you want .

lorkai99 Thu Nov 08, 2012 10:09 pm

but im not really in the mood for a new motor i want to experiment first. this is my first vw.

Ragman Fri Nov 09, 2012 9:21 am

Real MEAN sounds just won't come out of any stock 1600 regardless of what header/muffler you put on it.

AGREED!

Also when you DO get that "mean" sound out of a stock 1600 it usually means something is not running right!

Boolean Fri Nov 09, 2012 10:11 am

REALLY mean, no. But better than stock, yes. I think that induction is next on the wishlist for better sound. One throat per cylinder sounds 50% of the way to a lumpy cam.
This is actually something that I have encountered a few times when I sold tuning for Volvo, BMW, Ford - whatever, the customer wants an experience rather than outright performance. Sometimes it doesn't matter if the combo is right or not. Only the customer knows whats right for him (or her). I know that an Alfa Romeo Alfasud is a very entertaining car - yet it has a small 1500cc engine. It's a boxer, and has all the qualities of a well tuned VW1600 engine, except it is way more driveable. A red racecar is more likely to win a race than any other colour - waddayou say Mark? ;)

This thread can shed some light on the topic:

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=333608&highlight=preheat

The heat risers are located only on cylinders 2 and 4 and result in exhaust gases pulsing back and forth between the left and right sides of the heat riser. In contrast, the stock exhaust heat risers create a flow through situation that generates more manifold heat. That's pretty much the case for any non-stock exhaust with a single centermount carb.

I had an old boss that would go over some cars after I finished a performance super tune/port.cam work basicly a top end upgrade.well he would eff with the mixture screws till it was running rough instead of smooth.hie reason??the costomer wants to hear&feal it at idle too.I never understood it and still dont.the smoother you can have it the more $$$ /fun you should make/have with it when you step on it.(and not have to wory about fouling plugs)but what do I know.
