Hi Folks. What years can I take the front Eurovan seats from to use in my 1985 Westy. When I do pick up the seats, what do I need to take with me. As I understand the track connected to the eurovan seat will just slide into the track of the westy base.

Are any of the eurovan years nicer seats. Have the brown interior but won't complain if I have to put a little grey in it..Might just cover the seats with seat covers

Will I still be able to turn the seats around

Hmm, while I don't know.. lets take your posted subject line Eurovan seats and punch it into the SEARCH box at the top of this forum.

disregard the 1st result in the list, it'll get you caught in an endless loop.. where you are pointed to use the search.. but then if you scroll down and read a few historical subject lines.... voila.. how to fit a EV seat into a vanagon.. :wink:

I musta been feelin' snarky this am..

for EV seats you want the early years.. I know 93&95 but unsure on 96+ model years.
you have to trim the curl off the bottom of the slide in portion of the track on the seat to slip into the vanagon tracks. more info in the other threads.

Any and all year T4 Eurovan seats will fit with minor alteration. Each seat track on the seat bottom must be altered to fit the T3 Vanagon sliders. Pull the seats from each van, flip over and the alteration required will be obvious. Cover the seats and use a zip disc. 10 min. max. per seat and you're in business. BIG improvement.

Are you sure? I have read about a few people that couldn't get the later ones to work.

Nope :D I'm pretty sure though. The seat bases on the T4 haven't changed much in during their production run. I have a late model T4 here. I'll measure it up tomorrow.

Somebody needs to check '98 and later EVs. I know and have reported that a neighbor's '97 has the same rails as the '93 seats I used in my '87 Westy, so the modifications would be the same. We need to know which years (if any) differ so that interested parties buying these seats at a distance know which year EV seats to stay away from.

I just had a look at both a '92 and '00 T4. The seat sliders are indeed different between the two. The centre to centre measurement of 390mm is the same however. So to mount later T4 seats in a T3 you'll need the earlier T4 tracks- they bolt on. One more step but still doable. The later seats especially those after '99 are a much more modern looking upholstery than earlier T4s. Heated seats are more common too in the later models.

Just so as I'm sure, If I purchased a 99 or newer eurovan seat I would also make sure I got the runner currently attached to the body of the eurovan. At home your feeling is (as I haven't had a look yet) that all I would have to do is unbolt the T3 runner from the westy body and install the T4 runner from the Eurovan. That sounds even simpler than have to grind away areas on the track

It's actually easier to cut the runners on the seat. To change the rails on the Vanagon, you'll need to grind off all the welds holding them on the body, then fit and install the EV rails. There are no bolts involved. It's all welded. Cutting the seats is easier in my opinion. You'd be removing the red portion in the photo below.

Al, I should have been a bit more specific. The early T4 seat slider is what you'd need to "bolt in" the later T4 seats. The runners on the later T4 seats are of a different design but the runners bolt to seat bottoms and the seat bases are attached in the same fashion as the early T4 and are therefor interchangeable.

It needn't be that confusing. The later seats use the same bolt pattern on the seat bottoms as the earlier seats but their tracks are incorrect. The solution if you want to use the later T4 seats is to use early <'97 seat tracks. They'll bolt onto the later seats BUT still will require trimming to fit the T3 tracks. Make sense? :)

So . . . take the later model T4 seat, bolt a pre '97 seat track onto it, then trim it as in the photo above to fit the Vanagon seat track?

I think I understand now. Not sure about Al but I was confused and thought you meant bolt the early T4 seat track onto the Vanagon seat base.
