Here is one of many after a cursory Google search. It is a real danger.

FWIW I have been using Gibbs Brand to protect bare metal and other areas and it works awesome. I know alot of people use it on the patina/rat rod scene. |

I too use GIBBS Brand oil. It is great as it does not affect painting. |

so then are you the guy that's telling all the trikers to email me too?
also, it's a well known fact that linseed oil will sopontaneously combust. the rags should be submerged in water.
i rubbed the Jurassic out with linseed oil. i think it works well as a protectant. i also use GIBBS brand on other stuff. i think that has tranny fluid in it like marvel mystery oil does. |

linsead oil is sold two ways raw and boiled.
Raw will never really dry stays tacky for a long long time, boiled will dry.
I have had good luck using Penatrol . |

The linseed oil... are you guys using it straight or are you mixing it with turpentine or paint thinner like they recommend doing for the wood or stone?... Also this "Gibbs" brand stuff, is it the stuff that comes in the spray can that is used as a lubricant and about 4 other uses? I want to try something on my bus but i'm not sure yet, what do you think is the best stuff? |

I'm just using it straight it hardens up and looks great on the one spot I put it so far. |

Make sure to use the boiled version, use it straight. Seems to work best when the sun can bake it on. |

You might want to try a product called Strike Hold. It's a super penetrant that does not affect painting or welding and actually help remove rust. It will not wash off with water!!! |

I have always used Penatrol on my rusty panels, but ankor wax seems to be growing in popularity in the Australian VW scene. I have been told it lasts longer and makes the water bead better.
Below is a UK link for Ankor wax ( looks like it was made for agricultural equipment ) and the local supplier to the vw market.

That Ankor wax, looks like the ticket...I mean, who REALLY wants to apply anything, over and over again.
Just to be clear, I'm not trying to master the patina look...just caught between stripping off a respray and being left with a mix of bare metal/surface rust and areas of original paint until this is resolved. |
