The 16V site that's always linked to is inaccurate, to a degree, and doesn't give you the two-tones in specific terms; paintscratch.com is always linked to as well, and it's not 100% accurate either. Other van-specific sites don't have the colors in one place, or are missing years. So, we needed a complete list available in-house. A recent "what color is my van?" topic gave me the idea.

I'm not keen on making this a sticky (one look at the Bay Window's wall of stickies is an example of why not), but it is in the FAQ.

Great work!

One small addition. Slate blue. LH5V. I believe it's a commercial colour only but I'm going on my own observations. I've also only noted it on '87 and '88 Canadian spec Transporters.

It turns ou the the plate riveted to the body under the seat has the SALES code for paints!

For example, here in my plate under the LF seat...

It turns out the S8 is the sales code for LH1V! (H1V, the L designates Lacquer)

Great thread. Is there any information as to what brand paint the factory used and was it base/clear or single stage?
I just purchased the paint for my 90 doka and I chose Single Stage Glasurit and the new panels I have already painted look right to me, but my painter really prefers base/clear product but that looks way too shiny for a VW truck to me so I did single stage.

It's pretty safe to say your vehicle was single stage paint. VW didn't go to base/clear coat until the late 90's.

My red 97 Jetta was single stage. My 03 red Jetta is base/clear coat.

Maybe Audi, as a high end car line did base/clear coat earlier, I don't know.

My 88 Westy is listed as:

"Dove Blue Metallic (LH5U) with steel blue pop-top"

So what is the color code of the "steel blue pop-top"

Remember you lot in the US got some colours we didn't.
European and US differ a little.
When I did the pages shown above I only did the European ones, so you many find that some are missing for the US market.
I can send the rest of the info to someone from ETKA if they like to put it into a nice order? I just can't be arsed doing it myself.

I was "wasting" even more time online and discovered this scan of a sales brochure on the brick-yard site. It clearly shows that my S8S8 is a one color Savannah beige Metallic.
When the numbers differ such as examples on this screen shot, B5P6 for example, are painted a two tone.

I suspect that the other information on this plate tells me my interior, engine, transmission and options installed but I haven't yet located any information to decode the tag! :(

The stamped plate is called a PKN.
Google PKN decode and you can get the planned manufacture date from it.
