Back in the 90's, my uncle ran a used car lot. They had a beater late 70's Vette with some damage in one of the doors. My uncle said he tried so hard not to laugh when a guy was looking at it and said "Hmm, see it's got some rust in the bottom of the door." and was serious  |

A lot more pictures of this junkyard here. If you notice, there is not much rust on any of the cars there. I'm guessing no salt there?
It's a NASTY beast...
Wait for it....

I love how it looks like the interior panels in the back are still nice and two tone blue and white. |

I had a buddy working in Dodge dealership in the early 80's.
One of his big jobs was replacing fenders on NEW Plymouth Volare's and Dodge Aspens.
BRAND NEW cars right off the transporters and the fenders were rusting so bad the radio antennas fell through the holes. |

Having grown up in the northern rust belt, my vote is for mid to late 70's GM trucks. They would run forever, but would be so rusty you couldn't lock your dog inside. later 70's and early 80's Subarus are right up there, too.
Idaho just started salting the roads up here, so now my 87 Toyota bed is rusting. It was fine up until about three years ago. |

I call complete BS on that statement. The early model Volare/Aspens had no inner fenders so were prone to rust after they had been on the road for a season. They added them by '78, and fixed the previous ones, and then the issue was solved. I live in a pretty rusty area of the country and those later model Volare/Aspens were just fine including the '78 Volare Premier wagon I had.
What rusted were Fiat X1/9's (although I would love to have one) and the Spiders. Vega/Astre's were pretty bad, the front fenders on the Gremlin/Pacers, anything Japanese even up to the mid-90's and GM G body cars, the doors would rust out but the front fenders and rear quarters remained showroom fresh. :?
*EDIT* The early Rabbits were pretty bad for rust as well. |

All of those look pretty common here, along with any GM, Ford, or Dodge pickup from about mid 1990 on. I've en seen 5 and 6 year old Dodge mini vans, and Ford Focus's with a lot of rust. I just junked my 92 Pontiac sunbird due to extreme rust. The car ran great, but the rockers were completely gone, and the front of the rear quarters were flapping in the breeze. You could almost feel the front of the car shift when you either got on the gas, or on the brakes. Was still legal up until 2 months ago. I do know it weighed a lot less than it was supposed to. |

My parents had a Jeep CJ-7 start to rust apart soon after they got it. My aunt and uncle had a first gen Rabbit start rusting as soon as they got it.
Noone mentioned the Yugo yet, did they? Knew a guy who lost the muffler before he even left the dealership.

An old guy in my town still drives this rusty late 70's mercury monarch. I wonder when it will fall to the ground in pieces...
Notice you can see through one front fender and out the other.
Probably hasn't been washed since new.
