I picked up a used motor recently and am trying to identify what it is. The serial number below Alt stand is AE 356305 and on side of block is AS 41 211 101 101E. I've looked at the info here but I'm still not sure how to read the numbers.

Technical, above right, drop down engine codes. AE is a good one. |

The AE engine is a 71 or 72 1600cc dual port rated at 60 hp. |

That's what I was thinking but not sure because I also see the AE code under type 2 motors also. Thanks for the help. |

Bus's used the type 1 engine, bug, ghia, thing engine through 71 in the USA and the type 4 engine from 72-79. |

Is there a difference in the crank between the beetle and the bus? The reason I am asking this is that I am using a bus transaxle in a rail project and I had to cut 1/4" off of trans mainshaft for the bus trans to work with my motor. |

Believe that is symptom of only a couple of years of 091 bus trans-axle with extra long input shaft.... All air cooled engines (1300 up to 1600 - in stock form) use same crank/case/trans-axle dimensions......

I should have been more specific, Type 1 engine, type 4 transmission. |

I just picked up two motors and I'm trying to find out what are they.
The first one has 2H56 below a VW emblem then 6611825.
The second one has B5015762.
Both are single port bug motors.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

I just pulled the heater box off my Type 3 pancake motor and found that my case was stamped both VW and Audi. Since the motor is a pancake, I can't get to the engine number without tearing a bunch of parts off... can anyone help me ID the block based on the part number?
AS 41
043 101 102A
Germany H.
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers!

if its a stock pancake, it should actually have the engine number at the case split right by the center carb linkage |

There's no engine number on top of the case, so its not a stock pancake motor. Is there a way to tell the year/model of the engine without seeing the engine number? |

nope, most we can say by the part number(043 101 102A) is it is a 1/2 case halve most likely manufactured between 1969 and 1975('75 being the start of the as21 case in Germany) |
