about what will the average 4 seat sand rail weigh. how much on front and how much weight in rear - with vw suspension and trans and engine.

The Phil Fri Dec 09, 2011 3:28 am

It depends. Width, length. Ball joint, link pin. size of wheels, size of tires. size of gas tank. weight of seats. Also, a dune car, or a desert car. If the rear end is stock irs, swing, or if it has extended arms.
This rail weighs in at about 2500 lbs. It has a twin turbo northstar engine, full suspension fox king shocks, 5x5 rear end, huge a arm front end. this one is a desert car.

VW style, stock suspension will be in tHe 1200-1600 range.

my 2 seat rail, 1200 CC, split case trans with RGBs and 35" rear tires, weighed 1300 with me in it. lady at the truck stop laughed herself silly while weighing it. I could pick the front end up by myself, two people could hold it up.

To be more precise: I was thinking / asking about the basic older type rail with longer arms to give about 10 inch travel. 235-15 tires. A mild mannered machine for a family expedition car. From the replies, it sounds like I coud expect a weight of around 1500.

if it is 1500, front will be 500- rear will be 1000+ Depending on rear trailing arms.

A friend of mine has a Hi-Jumper frame stretched to 120" wb and widened 7" (room for 4 suspension seats). He runs coilovers all around, bus trans, Honda V6, fiberglass hood and sides, aluminum roof, no spare. He said his weighs 1900 lbs drivable.

Yeah, it works very well where we ride. I'm building a pretty similar buggy but with a 4 cylinder GM ecotec which I want to turbocharge later on.

That's a great looking buggy! What kind of frame is that?

joescoolcustoms Sat Dec 10, 2011 11:44 pm

Wow lostinbaja! I thought my 2 seater was light at 804 pounds. 790 is really light for a 4 seater.

It's a short cage Appletree frame built from .055 chromoly. I put the bare minimum on the buggy. It does have coil over rear suspension as well.
