I want a 2332cc engine for my 73. Where can I find the best one? Can these engines be used as daily drivers?

Best means expensive. There are several builders I would choose from, but most importantly figure out your budget and question whether your braking system, transmission and suspension are up to the task :)

Why a 2332??? It can easily be a daily driver with the correct setup!!! But if you plan on hot dogging it around, read the above post... Transmissions/cv joints don't like much hp...

I have a 2332 in my buggy that I drive on the street as well as autocross. Big motor means solid tranny mounts, mid mount, traction bar or kafer bar. a tranny in good working order will handle it no problem. I'm less than gentle with mine and everything except hte motor and torsion bars is stock. I do run steel mounts and a weld in midmount. Limit your tire size and you'll be fine. Disk brakes are not an option when you stuff 175+hp in the back of your car. The drums aren't up to the task.

1973 WHAT??? Bus, Karmann Ghia, Type 3, Beetle?

What's your budget mackyboy?

Have you ever driven a VW that has a high performance engine?

RockCrusher Thu Sep 15, 2011 10:05 am

I'd recommend RC enterprises but then I'm very biased. These guys have built all my engines and I never had a problem and they drive great. They do mostly 2110 and up sizes all the time so they really know their stuff. They can build you a super nice 2332 DD engine, not cheap but at a reasonable cost. And the best part is you can pick it up and save the shipping. They also do transmissions so you can upgrade that as well if you feel you need it. :D :D

RC (oh yeah....I am those guys!)

Under $10,000 but that is with suspension and braking as well. It's a 73 beetle. The fastest vw I have driven was in the 1900cc range, don't know the exact numbers. Why do you ask?

A 2332 is ridiculously fast.....

You're one of the few people to have set a good and reasonably high budget going into your project. Since I'm not a beetle handling expert I don't know what the suspension upgrades would cost but it seems like you should have plenty in your budget for a VERY nice engine and trans combo.....whether it was from us or someone else. With your budget you should end up with a very happy outcome. :)

I recommend JAke Raby's engines at Raby Aircooled Technolgy. It comes at a price but it is everything he says it is

Without question I would have RC ent. build my motor especially being in PA.

It is good to work with someone close to you so you can meet them in person and see their work/shop first hand-not to mention if you have any probs you can go down and seek assistance face to face rather than over the telephone or internet.

If there are not options available to you locally there are good builders that will work with you over the phone:
Kawell
Tims
Art Thraen
DRD
CB Performance
...

If its a real performance street engine, your looking at minimum 6k. My 2276 costed me about 7k. It depends what u want in it. That leaves 3k. Disc brakes all around, sway bars/camber correction devices, shocks, mid mount, engine bar, etc is doable. Squeeze another 1k outta your wallet with the left over balance and and you can afford a nice superstreet irs 3.88/4.12 tranny. Ive seen smaller engines blow bigger engines. Its all in the combo. Rc is your best bet for location and service. Im sure hes a man of his word and will cut you a sweet deal on maybe the engine and trans package. All u need after that is a paint job!

You need to grow some bigger cahonies

For suspension, I would do sway bars front and back, 27 or 28mm torsion bars. urethane bushings in the rear, Solid mounts and either a kafer or traction bar.

Lol! Whatever.....Im building a 2165 beast that will have plenty of juice in it......should be somewhere close to 180 HP if not just a bit more.......I went with the 78 crank for strength.......isn't that what all the drag guys are using?

CJG Thu Sep 15, 2011 3:42 pm

All I can say spend your money once and build it right. :D

Exactly How many have you drove ? I've witnessed a 102 HP 2332 on the dyno---Not fast at all. I'll bet your 2165 doesn't crack 140hp

jfats808 Thu Sep 15, 2011 4:26 pm

I know I already tried to break it to him about his projected power in his 2165 build. He seems to thinks its going make 180hp.
