Many companies make a prep cleaner usually referred to as "wax and grease remover". You should be able to find it at any local paint dealer. This would be your best cleaner. |

14+ years working in auto body, yes there is such a thing as "wax and grease" removers. It is widely used in professional shops and easy to use for the hobbiest.
Here is a link to a product that Eastwood sells, http://www.eastwood.com/pre-qt-and-aerosol.html,
This will ensure a properly cleaned surface for paint application. Thinner and acetone are not the way to go. I have seen those used and seen failures. Thinner and acetone evaporate off to quickly. Another method is to use a sanding agent like Scuff Stuff. This is an abrasive product made by Presta. Apply it with water and scotchbrite. This aids in cleaning the surface and scuffing the surface. Follow this link,

Look at Auto Body Toolmart and Eastwood tool for the correct materials to use for your project. Eastwood also has techs you can reach by phone that are very knowledgeable. |

Any auto paint store carries the was and grease remover. Nothing but a tack rag after that. You really don't want acetone on body filler. |

avoid questionable advice at this stage, having to redo a paint job because you listened to bad advice at this stage will make you very upset.
so far the above advice is spot on, any of those products will work ,.well except for the thinner. i wouldn't use it.
i don't scrimp with some cheepass halfass methods.
not when my money and resulting paint job is on the line.
PPG DX for my money.

Acetone is strong stuff. We have a tone of it at work (a lab) and I was it in an ultrasonic cleaner to strip the paint and oil and such off of parts. Took off everything but the rust. Even just leaving parts in it will clean them good, so I'd avoid using it. |
