hey guys building my first turbo 1600 dp. since this is my first build im trying to keep it simple and reliable. i wasnt going to turbo it to start but got a great deal on a never installed t3 turbo so i figure what the heck. my question is i have a brand new set of empi 34 carbs im just wondering if they will work with a turbo or if i need a different carb?

a lot of thought has to go into turboing an engine. so first off
is it a turbo kit with some plumbing or just the turbo?
do you plan to blow through or pull through?

the empi carbs-sounds like you have 2 for a dual set up? so the best turbo set up is a blow through, however the carbs must be pressurized, if not you will lose gas flow through the carbs and the engine will run poorly from lack of fuel. i cannot recall if the empis are pressurized for turbo so replacements might need to be found.

I would search the internet for turbo setups to see which interest you the most. some are pretty intense, and require different style hoods- whether or not this concerns you.

its just a turbo. i have seen both set ups as faras blow through or pull through and from the stand point i have from previous cas(have been a mustang guy as long as i can remember) and all iknow is blow through. does the pull through work better? i like the way the pull through looks and the enginering seems to be simple enough but it doesnt back fire? and how does the blow off valve blow off pressure that has fuel in it? i do have two carbs as of now for it. but im not afraid to sell them and buy another setup just wondering what the best carb set up there is for a turbo bug and it is a baja so hood fitment isnt an issue as the back und has been cut off.

The best carburated turbo setup I have ever seen, was a draw through system utilizing a variable venturi SU carb. The car was very drivable with great trottle response and good fuel economy. There are different size SU carbs that can be used. Do a search and you should find more info on the setup.

 Turbo for a small engine can be done. 30 yrs ago I spent $1000 for a small Turbo with a special small carb for a 1600cc engine. and then into a 1641. Still have the carb in a box. Had some power but the carb kept leaking on me and was afraid of an engine fire. Still have the exhaust pipes.

Anyway that was long time ago. Did go with the DCOE carb which was an improvement along with 90.5 pistons, cam etc. What happens is a person is never satisfied with the power and keeps looking for more.

I had a VW engine repair/rebuilding engine business so it was my spare time and a lust for improvements in speed.

Built a VW NHRA legal licensed Dragster with a 2180cc with 48IDA after trying 40's.. Never enough speed.

Money is the main factor here. You want to dance...expect to pay for the music or sit on the sidelines and watch.

There is NO such thing as a cheap long lasting Turbo setup.

My current 1776cc Turbo in a 66 bug is almost 20 yrs old and still going strong.

I blueprinted, balanced, stainless exhaust system, DCOE Weber, modified Turbo and so forth down the line. Everything NEW from the bottom upwards. Money?...it does cost but look how long I've had the engine...now in it's 3rd car. Sell the car and keep the engine is what I did. Had the Engine in a 66 bug and then a 63 Ghia and back to a 66 bug. I like the 66 for what it has in the improvements for that yr and along with the 67 similiar.

Blow or Draw...I like the draw which uses a single sidedraft for street use.

$500 as a start and then $1500 in addition for the rest of the setup...but wait...what about the cost of a proper set up engine...now we are talking another $2000. Thats what I spent on my engine plus the car.

That was many yrs ago. Take a good look at the prices today of a turnkey Turbo engine...person has to take out a 2nd on the house.

Yes...Turbo for a small 1600cc engine can be done...but is rare.

"SU" is the brand name. I have seen them for sale on Ebay and in The Samba classifieds.
If you do a search trying to locate an SU carb you need to spell it "Carburettor"

I have never seen a progressive run properly on a naturally aspirated VW engine. I have never seen a progressive run at all on turbo VW engine.

How about a Keihin 40mm CV carb off a Harley Davidson, They have a accelerator pump in them, you can find them pretty cheap on e-bay or craigslist, I just picked one up for $30.00 there is a pretty good aftermarket for them. They should flow enough for a 1600 turbo motor, there is a fuel enrichment device for them that adds fuel as flow increases, that bolts on the float bowl, they are made by a company called Thunder-Jet if I remember right.

ok so i just figured ouut i have a set of su carbs off a midget in my basement only question now is are they big enough lol

DarthWeber Mon Jul 11, 2011 3:45 pm

There's a chart in this link that lists SU applications by engine cc and approx HP output, it might help???

http://sw-em.com/su_carbs.htm

Take notice of note 3 on the chart.

montyd Mon Jul 11, 2011 8:42 pm

well from this it looks like the best set up is 1-2" su carb lucky for me mine are 1 and 1/4 so it wont work if i just run one. and lucky for me the 2" ones seem to be sold in pairs lol i guess ill look around till i find a single maybe get lucky and find one in a junk yard. our midget has i believe a 2 barre; weber ill find out the cfm maybe i can borow that one since the midget is even farther from being on the road then the bug and is being restored anyways so the brand new weber will probably come off anyway

You could try this setup.

Blow thru Bocar 34 with megasquirt controlled Edis crankfire ignition.

Gives you dead on timing control with boost retard.

Runs flawless and no flat spots, just gets up and goes.........quickly. 8)

It's been running since May and I have over a 1000 miles on it already.

Currently at 10 lbs. boost and soon to go higher......

... Just talk to Miniman82. Get one of his rebuilt Rajay set ups. These kits were made to work on stock vw engines... though the engines should really be made to work with the turbo better they can be dropped on with no issues.
This is a cheaper, reliable BOLT ON set up. Doesn't really get much simpler than this really. You can even utilize your stock carb with the electronic choke.

the only problem is i sold the stock carb when i got my empi set up just looking ffor a good carb for a turbo to replece them preferable suck through
