View original topic: W8CC Spark Plugs?
thefladge Wed Jul 06, 2011 4:48 pm

I just went to Vee Dub Parts Unlimited to get some spark plugs.

I wanted a set of W8CC plugs, but they said only WR8CC plugs are available.

Is this correct? I don't really need resistor spark plugs.

Bill271 Wed Jul 06, 2011 5:07 pm

Hmmmm i get w8cc all day long..............

DarthWeber Wed Jul 06, 2011 5:27 pm

Try Gene Berg.......yeah I know, but you never know what they have on the shelf collecting dust.

Then again, they might not sell you spark plugs unless you can provide proof you bought all your engine parts from them.

Will WR8CC sparks plugs have any negetive effect on my engine's performance?

DarthWeber Wed Jul 06, 2011 6:03 pm

Let's go firm with a definite maybe. I've never had problems or noticed a decrease in performance with resister plugs but some guys don't like them.

Buy them all, cause once they're gone, they're gone.

Bosch seems to have this wild hair up their ass for either discontinuing the stuff for the Aircooled VW's, or adding strange ingredients (like yttrium) in the plugs and renumbering them. The plug that replaces the w8cc is a resistor plug. If your not running a capacitive discarge ignition, like a MSD/Mallory box, I don't think you'll have any issues. If you want a non-resistor plug you can use a NGK B5ES or under NGK's new numbers, a 6410. For a little nicer burning plug without a resistor, that has a projected insulator, you could use a BP5ES/7832

NGK B5ES.. better than Bosch.

fivelugshortaxle Wed Jul 06, 2011 10:58 pm

What's better about them....? Details please..........

Easy to find, and seem to foul less.

No, it's simple mathmatics. Worldwide sales for air cooled parts have deminished to the point where it is no longer profitable to continue producing parts.

I have never been able to tell any difference between Bosch and NGK spark plugs.

Did I read that right, Glenn said...

"Better then Bosch"

While digging around in my garage today I found an NOS set of W8CC spark plugs in the bottom of a box. I will use these now and save the WR8CC plugs for next time.

Yes and I have also said "not all EMPI parts are crap".

Actually Glenn was gramatically correct - he said Better than Bosch.

You misquoted him.

Has anyone compiled a list of Empi parts that do work as advertised?

Good enough for me..

No but i've seen EMPI cranks and h-beam rods that measure up. I've also heard the 2nd generation of the IDF copy are getting better.

But as with any part, you have to carefully inspect and blueprint it before using. YOU are the final inspector and make the decision to use it or reject it.

So what are the correct plugs I should be running. I have:

1971 1600 DP super beetle with LONG REACH heads. Currently I am using W7DC Bosch plugs.

Can someone confirm for me what I should be using????

If your engine is 100% stock, then I would be running a little hotter plug like a WR8DC, or Bosch's new number of 7905. If you are not having any problem with the plugs fouling that you are using now, you could just continue to use them as well.

There is nothing strange about yttrium or irridium either for that matter. If you can get your normal plug and they have added yttrium to it....thank your lucky stars they are making older type plugs with updated materials.

All adding yttrium or irridium does is make the electrode much, much less suceptible to high temperature erosion and spalling. That simply means that they last much much longer before you need to regap them.

Why do you think that most modern Volkswagon cars run irridium plugs.....and list a replacement range of 50K miles or better? Very very stable gap and much more stable resistances from plug to plug at high temeoeratures. Othere than the fact that the modern ion sensing ignition systems require extremely stable resistance in order to deliver uniform sparks......that same quality does nothing but positive things for our cars. This was interesting...I am running an 009 distrib w/ pertronix electronic ignition and the same WR8CC+ Bosch plugs in my 1915cc. I am having some weird ignition issues as well. I fouled the #1 plug, replaced all plugs and put new bosch wires, ran it well for about 30 miles, then fouled the #3 plug. Maybe I should try the NGK, or perhaps there's something else going on. Coil is used, but produces good spark, distrib is used. Anyone have any clue as to what might be going on?

P.S. - I'm running Dual 44 IDF jetted down for the motor and sync'd.

Many thanks!
