View original topic: Quick question on engine case sealant
agggilli Fri Apr 15, 2011 5:20 pm

Ok, so I went to the parts store tonight to find something to put on my case halves to seal them up on my new engine build. I know I cannot use anything with silicon in it. I was looking for Permatex #3. All I could find was Permatex Indian Head Gasket Shellac. Will this work ok to seal the case?

I use the shellac and have been doing so for almost 20 years…no problems.

GM Gasket Maker 1052943 is all I ever use, same anaerobic flange sealant as Loctite 518.

Very nice list, and I'm glad to see what I bought is on there. I really wanted the Aviation, as that is what I used many years ago and it worked great. In my area of the country we have Advance Auto, Autozone and O'reilys. None of them carry it here locally.

Go to a REAL auto parts place. NAPA is one such store and everyone I've been in has various sealants and always aviation.
The stores you mention are simply basic auto parts stores geared towards the home brew shade tree mechanic and will not or cannot get you many parts that one needs in the real business of auto repair.
