67 Java Bug Mon Jun 16, 2003 8:00 pm

I am new to VW and could you clarify what that means? Sometimes an ad will say "not EMPI" and it seems there is a co. called EMPI and yet other ads say "original EMPI" and so on. Thanks for helping a new 67 owner!!! Paula

EMPI trademark was sold a few years back and is now put on a bunch of (mostly anyway) crap parts from Taiwain...

Originally founded in the 60's by Joe Vittone, Engineered Motor Products Inc. ( EMPI) was one of the first of a handfull of major players to shape the VW air cooled performance industry.

this is a very brief answer to your question... I'm sure someone else will add more.

So that if I wanted to put quality parts on the 67 are you saying that to stay away from empi parts? I dont want to ruin a bug that was kept in great condition or lessen the value so to speak. Thanks again...Paula

It depends on the part, some Empie stuff is a good value and some is....not exactly quality. What type of "Stuff" are you refering to?

keifernet Mon Jun 16, 2003 9:41 pm

well. be leary of "new" EMPI parts anyway. If you can get ahold of REAL original EMPI parts or accesories (if you can find them and afford them) then that is different. But 99% of the plastic wrap BS hanging on the wall of the parts house is shit! IMO ....

keifernetnet is right. most of the modern day EMPI items are garbage IMO as well. your better off sticking with either original stuff or look into other brands. the EMPI brand is riding its name's history these days if you ask me.

EMPI = Exclusively Mediocre Parts Inside

Crappy exhaust was the last straw. I'll avoid their stuff in the future if I can.

EMPI originally stood for European Motor Products Inc., later changed to Engineered Motor Products Inc. I have a 1967 EMPI catalogue and it is very informative regarding engine parts and combos. The rights to the name were subsequently bought by a former EMPI employee.

While they do source some of their parts from Taiwan (the same as Bugpack and others) and there can be quality problems with some of those parts, they also import OEM parts such as the VW crankcase from Auto Linea in Brazil and were one of the main driving forces behind the 48 IDA Weber carb being built again in Europe. They also sell other quality products such as Engle camshafts. As with any supplier, do some research regarding the results people are getting with the parts. My experience is that most suppliers have both quality and less expensive (ie. cheap quality) parts...

EMERGENCY MEDICAL PERSONNEL IMEDIATELY!

at least if you to install ( or in my case remove and throw in the dumpster)
any of the chrome tin products sold by them! :D

You get what you pay for :) I haven't had any problems with EMPI products. Depends on what you want and how much you want to pay for it. EMPI is readily available at most VW shops, so if you need something fast..there you go. By the way I put all EMPI chrome tin on about 6 months ago. No problem :)
