I ordered a fuel sending unit from eisparts.com and it says it is for a 73-79 bus but it looks nothing like the one in my bus. (i have a 73) what unit do I need. there are no other options that seem to match what mine looks like.

Lucky you, you've got an early 73, the 68-72 sender is the one you need.

i see, eisparts.com offers two other fuel senders. one is twice the price of the one i purchased but not the exact years you specified.. the other is the same price as incorrect one, but has the years you specified. they look virtually identical in the pictures. would either of them work or do i need to get the one you mentioned?

might be one is 6V and the other 12V.

Voltage doesn't matter for senders, one ends in VDO and one in B (brazil?).

so are you saying that the '55 - '67 fuel sender would work? or would not work? it is much less expensive, that is why i am hoping it will.

Ahhhhhhh......I see the difference now (read the whole description :? ), both supposedly made by VDO but one says pre 68, it'll work but it's too short, if you don't mind showing empty with +1/4 tank left it'll do fine.

I have a '73 and bought the early sender.... thinking it uses the 68-73 Cylinder type sender like what was installed ....

Late '73-On used the one you recieved from Eisparts..... Yes the early one is expensive.... (the previous owner told me he changed the tank out many years back for a '72 model.... and he said the gauge never worked right......

I'm having to change my fuel gauge to work with the early model sender sender..... I'm not pulling the engine and tank out anytime soon to change it ......

As previous posts have said, you have an Early 73 (68-Early 73), VW Part No 211-905-051 used up to Vin 2x3 2138 900

The sender in your hand is a late 73-79 style, VW Part No. 211-919-051 A, used from Vin 2x3 2138 901

We've been making these now for about a year or so now, because VDO was getting too expensive or too damn hard to get! Strange, but since we started making them we sell a ton of both styles into Europe, more than the USA :?
