Never heard of a Beetle GT, was about to ask if this guy was just blowing smoke but asked the web instead...

Interestingly the GT Beetle website says the cars were only available in Tomato Red, Lemon Yellow and Apple Green but both the one in the picture on the website and on the YouTube sure look like Clementine!

I've seen a few GT beetles in the UK in that same orange as well

The GT was an option package, it replaced the 1300cc with a 1600cc engine and had some trim upgrades. In the USA we all got the 1600cc engine.

Seems like it would be easy to clone one and have a
GT.

I believe the GT Beetle was only offered in the UK. Other than disc brakes and some trim options, it was pretty much the same as a stock US beetle. A bit of trivia though, they came with a GTBeetle badge on the rear deck which made it the only "Beetle" ever badged as a Beetle.

my old subtly modified GT Beetle in Apple Green. 2500 made, badged at the dealers so some remain badged as 1300S, standard 1300 with 1600 twin port motor, revised final drive, beige cloth trim, sports wheels, Lemmerz Rostyle I recall, centre console around the gear lever and a perforated chrome trim on the gear lever.

My two to complete the set:

Lemon Yellow (before it was wrecked ):

Tomato Red:

The yellow and red can both look orange in the right (wrong?) light - it's almost a condition of owning these two colours that one must be hyper-sensitive about them! My dad went to the VW dealer to get a touch-up pot for his yellow one in the seventies and the parts guys almost came to blows over the colour :D

The GT Beetle was UK/Ireland only to celebrate 300,000 beetles being imported. The original brochure has been uploaded here. The main difference (apart from being RHD) between them and the European 1300S seems to be the beige corduroy/vinyl interior - try finding the right corduroy fabric now to reupholster them...

The GT also featured a higher ratio gearbox than other UK swing axle bugs got, they are pretty sort after here.
