Howdy,
I'm looking to get some collector plates for my 69 Westy and don't know if I need truck plates, or regular car plates. Anyone know? Thanks.

Agreed...the DMV will give you the plate you need. It comes pretty quick in the mail. I had a panel bus, and a collector plate is a collector plate. |

If you are asking about YOM plates, you should be fine with car plates on a Westy, or any other passenger bus. A panel or single cab might require a truck plate. |

Thanks, looks like I'll need to go to the DMV. When I say "collector" plate, I mean a plate that was made the year my bus was made. If I have one of those I can register it as a "collecter" plate and never have to pay tabs again. I'm not sure if that is the kind of plate you are talking about. THanks. |

A collector plate is the new one that actually says collector plate.
A YOM (year of make) plate is the one that would have been used the year your car was first sold.
In order to register a YOM plate you must have the date tag on it also. The best place to pick up one of these is at one of the many car shows. They usually run about 30 - 50 bucks, from used license plate dealers. Sometimes you can find them cheaper from someone that just happens to have one. If you need some info about a used license plate dealer pm me. |

the only issue you may have with the collector or restored plate is that you cannot use the vehicle as a daily driver. |

Make sure you go through the DMV/licensing/whatever... I once bought a 60 bug that had yom plates, and was told they were "collecter plates, you never have to pay for tabs again!" Me and my ignorant self just went with it, drove it quite regularly for a couple of months, and finally got pulled over. The sheriff said the car had the record for longest time since last registration! YIKES! He laughed and told me to stop driving it until I figured it out...I can't believe I was that FREAKIN' ignorant! Anyway, I have never looked at collecter plates the same.... |

At lease here in SC you have to find your own YOM plate then check w/ the DMV to see if the number sequence isnt in use already. at this point now buy your YOM plate if OK and fill out the forms, submit a color pic of the plate and wait for your registeration to come back in the mail. we dont have to put stickers on the plate just have them in the glove box w/ the new registration. |

just put a 64 beetle parked in a barn for 12 years back on the road that has the og 1963 plates on it. DMV would not let me use the plates and issued a 'new' ugly 7 digit plate for the car. Even with a 'collector plate' you would not be able to carry groceries or anything in the vehicle, and was told so when I re-registered my 66DC two years ago and wanted those on it. |

they just tell you that so you don't drive it or get non collecter plates
my dd has collecter plates on it and it's been my driver driver for about 6 months now even comuted to tacoma in it
the only way to get busted for it is if the same cop saw you driving it every day and most of them don't even know the rules on them anyways |

Hi, hank and joe.
I have those plates on my 67 bug and 63 bus.
Never been hasseledhoffed. Most police in my part of the world have no clue as to what the law means.
If I was ever pulled over,, and get questioned.
I'm always going to a vw show,, or I'm going to a vw club event. That's legal.
And as far as old dated plates,,just have to find a pair and get the local DOT to approve them. Had the State Patrol inspector tell me that last week. |

YOM plates are just like Collecter plates (in WA), you only need one, and you no longer need to renew them every year (permanent registration). You have to have the correct plate and year sticker for the car you are putting them on, the DMV has a colored listing of which plates are correct for whaatever year. I have them on 3 cars now, one since 1996 and have never been bothered by the law. |

My excuse is that I am testing the car, which is always true. I also have another vehicle which is regularly registered, so the daily transportation clause is highly subjective. Here is the Washington blurb:
"
Collector vehicle plates
Vehicle requirements
To use collector plates, vehicles must be:
* More than 30 years old.
* Capable of operating on the highway.
* Owned and operated as collector vehicles.
Collector vehicles may be driven:
* To and from auto shows, circuses, parades, displays, special excursions, and antique car club meetings.
* For testing purposes.
* For the pleasure of others without compensation.
Collector vehicles may not be used for:
* Commercial purposes or to carry a load.
* Regular transportation in the manner of a fully licensed vehicle.
License plate requirements
Collector license plates:
* May be assigned to currently registered passenger vehicles, motorcycles, or trucks.
* Are good for the life of vehicle.
* Aren’t required to display month/year tab.
* Aren’t renewed annually.
* Must be displayed on the rear of the vehicle. (You must provide your restored or current license plates. If you provide a set, the collector vehicle plates may be displayed on the front and rear of the vehicle).
Option to use restored license plates
You may use a restored license plate on your collector vehicle instead of a collector vehicle license plate. A restored license plate is a Washington-issued license plate that was designed for use in the year of the vehicle’s manufacture. The license plate must be restored to a condition that allows it to be identified with its year of issue. A reproduction of the original cannot be used as a restored license plate.

I'll only take my bus out in the summer and for the most part only for camping. I think this fits the description of "for the pleasure of others without compensation" Thanks.

problem I have is that I work right across form the police station and was pulled over last year for not displaying the proper front plate. I had been running with an oval german plate. He worked the 'ticket' up to $850, luckily I kept my mouth shut and didn't ask if the city was really that hard up, he quoted improper plate display, not having correct plate on front, etc, etc.
I pulled the front plate from under the seat and he let me off 'with a stern warning' blah, blah, blah. Probably didn't get enough coffee and it was 6 in the morning. |
