I'm about to put tie rods on and the steering rack is accessible to put some grease on the teeth. There's a very light amount on it now and the Bentley refers to some special "steering rack grease". I'm not buying it, so anyone know if I can use all purpose grease or moly grease? I'm thinking low speed movement, low pressure = moly and I've got some bazillion dollar synthetic from previous projects. Use it? Thanks - couldn't find it on search.

I'm replacing the steering rack boots on my Pwr Steering rack. The ball joints under the boots can now be greased.
Can I use Redline CV grease? I also have Amalie "Blue Hi-Temp Lithium Complex #2 Grease" http://www.amalie.com/Portal.aspx?CN=9B9902AB94DD
if that would be a better choice.
Seems like either would work fine. |

I think either, as well. It's not really a stressful application when you get down to it, in terms of challenging a grease's lube properties. Goal is to get fresh grease in there so next time the gears mesh it is on fresh grease instead of slightly metal wear infused grease. Don't use any solvent to remove old, just wipe away what you can.
Ditto ball joints. Red Line is top shelf.

I've done this a couple times when replacing cracked or torn steering rack boots. I never really thought much about it but I just slathered some regular NGL #2 grease on there. I think it was a red synthetic one time and a moly another time, whatever was within reach. :D
Again, I don't think it's really all that critical so long as you keep it clean and have a bit of lube on there. Most (but not all) automotive grease is lithium based so as long as it'compatible I doubt you'll have any issues. My customers haven't. |

For what it's worth, the Special Manual Rack Grease has been changed to VW # G 052 168 A1. I bought mine from ECS Tuning as it was easier than accessing a local dealer. |
