I'm just about ready to start putting my new carpet kit in and I was wondering what kind of adhesives people used to get the carpet to stick to things like the firewall, wheel wells and front kick panel area. I want something super sticky that won't fall off. I have dynamat on now, which I don't think will be a problem for the carpet to stick to.
I've read in searches that people sometimes don't glue it because of water that can sometimes get underneath it, but I'm not gonna worry about that. So let me know what you guys found that works/doesn't work |

3M spray adhesive. Just be sure after spraying both the carpet & firewall, you allow a few minutes for the glue to tack up. This will give you the strongest bond.
Don't just spray both surfaces & join them together immediately

I like 3m 90(green can)..... works great!, bought it at home depot.
I've also tried different brands of spay adhesive, and the different 3m adhesives
and the 3m 90 is the best for me so far! |

I used a carpet adhesive I bought from a big box retail store. I needed to pull back a section of tthe carpet months later to work on my stereo and the adhesive actually stuck TOO well... It adhered to the fibers and pulled them from the backing when I tried to reposition it. I can live with it, but I'd use a spray type adhesive if I had to do it again. |

Alright awesome! thanks for all the input, I think I'll take a trip to Home Depot this weekend and look at the 3M product line.
My neighbor does upholstery work and I asked him if he had adhesive I could use. He said what he has isn't meant for carpets. So I'd rather get something good and sticky, so the carpet doesn't peel off or move around. |

I have been restoring VW bug for years. DO NOT USE 3M 77(this is for arts and craft material, once it heats up in the cab on hot summer days it begins to peel), You can use 3M 90 (I like this stuff for installing a new headliner) The best stuff that I have used in WILDENS ADHESIVE. You can buy it at Walmart or Home Depot. You brush it on instead of spary on. By brushing it on you make less mess and the job looks more professional, buy a couple of cheap bushes which will work fine. Wildens is pretty potent stuff make sure when you use it you are in a well ventalated area. It doesn't matter how hot it will get in you cab, Wilden WILL NOT PEAL... I have tried all kinds of adhesive products for carpet kit in :vw: Vw bugs, wildens works the best in all types of weather... |

I did my own carpeting vs buying a kit and used.... a glue gun with a multi purpose glue. Worked fine. I only needed random glue here and there for good sticking. None of it has come off the firewall at all and it's been pretty cold here and there in Denver. My .02
Then again I would probably use a glue gun to build a backyard deck. ha |

A related question:
How do you remove the old glue from the body?
If you were to preserve the paint underneath, what's the best way?
If you were to completely re-spray the car anyhow, down the road, what's the best way?
Thanks. |

Flyboytroy, I did a search on the walmart and homedepot sites and can't find Wildens.
I also did a general google search and didn't find it in the first pages of hits.
Is the name misspelled or something?
It sounds like something I would want to use instead of spray.
If I do use 3M 90, what can I use to clean it from paint and carpet where it doesn't belong?
Thanks. |
