I am looking at upgrading my 1600 with a full flow filter:

http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=ACC-C10-5385

Will this set-up interfere with the stock exhaust?

Ask the vendor to be sure.

I noticed that all of the full flow oil filters on cip1 are made by EMPI . . . I haven't read too many good things about EMPI . . . So, should I just avoid?

I do.

They are not all made by EMPI. You can get the OE genuine VW oil pump/filter:

Quote: May interfere with stock original mufflers

Perfect, thanks!

The full flow oil pump/filter combos are too restrictive in my opinion. The oil galleries are way too small. Compare the that with the galleries in the engine case and you will know what I'm talking about. As the filter gets more contaminated from doing its job only adds to the restriction. Although on a stock 1600 with regular interval oil changes, it should work ok. I would never use one on anything larger than stock. The proper way to full flow is to drill and tap the case (oil return) and run an external filter, and yes, this can be done without disassembling the engine.

I reiterate what Chipp Say's and forgot who Qouted the Exhaust problem !
But too close to the exhaust isnt good !
Full flowing the case is the way to go < But not on stock Generally speakin !
But your askin the right question's of the Right People !
Have your Case Tapped for Full flow << if you intend to build over 1600cc !
Or High CCR 1600 etc Just Depend's !
Empi << I prefer Bug Pack when ever I can !
But in keepin it Honest ? 1776CC Engle 110 041 Head's << Honest !
No way around Empi / Bugpack./ Universal / Made in China / Scatt ?
It's a go for what you know Enviroment with aftermarket parts !
Some of these Part's sold will flat smoke your Motor or Pound your Car apart !
Ask before Buying is best ?
Sean

Sean

It was good enough for the factory.

I already have the engine out and on the workbench. I am interested in "free flowing" the case. Any instruction guides / articles out there (preferably with pics)?

chiprodriguez Thu Feb 04, 2010 10:43 am

The Gene Berg book of instruction describes the process in detail. If you buy the full flow kit from him (I personally would) the detailed instructions are included.

MiketheSpike Thu Feb 04, 2010 10:54 am

Is this what you are talking about?

Where does the case get drilled?

69 Jim Thu Feb 04, 2010 10:57 am

thanks, but I have a '74 1600 DP

Ok, so where does the case get drilled?

69 Jim Thu Feb 04, 2010 11:03 am

That was a link for Berg full flow kits in general.

Any idea why they actually went to the system in the last few years?

saulverde Thu Feb 04, 2010 11:59 am

The whole 9 yards http://www.huelsmann.us/bugman/FilterTech.html

Just what is needed for the filter http://www.dune-buggy.com/techtips/fullflow/

Or you can go with a pump/filter assembly. Since the filter will be horizontal everytime you change that filter look forward to a mess and replacing the whole unit when the pump gets worn out.
