View original topic: Did I Get The Right Wix Oil Filter?

I've been hearing stories of the declining quality of the Fram HP1 oil filter, so I decided to try a Wix filter.

I was up in Redding visiting my mother for Thanksgiving and stopped by the local auto parts store. I just happened to be passing by and decided at the last second to stop by.

I knew they carried Wix filters and Gates belts so I figured I would pick some up spares for my Baja Bug.

Long story short: I asked the counter guy for the Wix filter that was equal to the HP1. He sold me the Wix 51515.

Is this the correct oil filter?

A quick Google search says they are the same.

Great! They were much less expensive than the HP1. Only $5.50. I bought 2.

The Napa Gold 1515R is the same as the Wix 51515 with a different label and sometimes even cheaper.

I called WIX a couple of years ago to find out the difference between the 51515 and the 51515R. The R is the racing version and has better flow because it's less restrictive but the down side is it doesn't filter as well. The gave me the numbers and they were significant but I don't recall them. They did not recommend the R for streeet use.

I'll be happy as long as the Wix filter can handle the same pressure as the Fram filter.

the wix filters are the best disposable filters on the market. I use standard filters for break in then switch to race filters after that in the v8s i build.

Wix is a quality filter compared to what's currently on the market. Filter much better than a Fram and uses butyl rubber on the valves. HP1 is the same filter media as standard Frams, just has a higher burst rating.
Wix has a higher micron rating on it's filtering media so it captures much smaller particles.

I have been using the wix, no problems to report.
