View original topic: Painting Break Drum and Backing Plate? Page: 1, 2  Next

This weekend, I have to rebuild the entire break system (see other thread). I was wondering if there are any issues with painting the break drum and backing plate? I was thinking there may be an issue with heat disappation?

Thanks
Greg

Brake drums do two processes...they provide a surface for the brake shoe to transmit friction and they dissipate heat.Heat dissapation by the brake drum is critical for the brake shoe to function correctly, and not overheat and "fade"...painting the drum acts like a blanket, trapping the heat and reducing the drums ability to cool...never paint brake drums...backing plates ok...

I have painted every brake drum on probably 25 cars and never found any difference.
I find it hard to believe that 3 thousands of paint will drastically diminish the cooling rate or the heat absorption rate to any noticeable difference
I will tell you what
Take a brake drum and put a torch on it for 25 seconds

Put your hand on the other side

Take the same brake drum after it is cool and painted and put a torch on it for 25 seconds

Put your hand on the other side

Or a temp laser

Baaaaaaaaaa hummmmmmmmm Buggggggggg

I, too have heard the warnings against painting drums - and have flown in the face of such wisdom. I've had no issues with heat transfer.

go for it. having painted drums behind the wheels is a great look.

I've painted drums and never noticed any issues related to loss of performance or reduced wear.

Well I guess you all told me...but thats why they didnt come painted in the first place,in case your wondering...

The ones I see only dust their cars, they don't know what a wrench is.
