Anyone here use the NRG ball bearing quick release steering wheel hub? This is a super clean disconnect system, just wanna know if it can be compatable to a stock VW steering shaft. |

Check real close, but I believe "most" of the quick release hubs require the center section to be welded to steering shaft..... This may or may not be true of all units but it may influence what you want to do......

Also, I 'think' DMV doesn't like them. So, double check that too. |

This particular one is not weld-in. Good point about the DMV though. |

The DMV issue is a good point. I do know that Grant makes a quick release hub that works with their steering wheels. I actually have one that I am thinking about using in my buggy. The only trade-off is that it sticks out farther than if you had only the steering wheel on the column. I estimate the difference is about 3". My does not need to be welded onto the steering shaft, using the stock nut to hold it on. |

My buggy that I bought had one but it had a little play in it so I am not using it on my rebuild. It was the weld on kind. The buggy was built in the early 70's and it may have been worn loose. Are the new ones tight with no play in the steering wheel (back and forth like loose tie rods)? |

I know mine is tight. It tightens down to the steering column like a stock wheel, and the steering wheel is connected by installing and turning it to "latch". From there it has a key that can be removed. There is no freeplay at all. |

Scarybuggy Jay, What brand/type of quick disconnect do you have? Sounds pricey.  |

This is exactly the type of hub that I have, along with a standard Grant 3-spoke steering wheel:

It is pricey, but I bought mine used from an ad here on the Samba. It also came with the steering wheel, and stock turn signal switch - all for less than half what just the hub costs new. Look around and I'm sure you can find a great deal. Patience is the key when looking to save $$$$......... |

Got mine off of eBay. You have to find a hub that fits the steering shaft that you are using and adapts to a momo pattern. That was the most difficult be still pretty easy part of the process. Can't remember where I got the hub though. Sorry. |

My friend just had a quick release come loose at night. Wrecked his rail and it wasn't pretty. Lucky he and his wife weren't hurt.. or worse than they were. Ruined the front beam, and bruised the two of them bad enough. |
