View original topic: "Welding" a Nut on a Broken Exhaust Stud

I've read a lot of archive posts on the subject and saw this method suggested.

But never came across anyone suggesting using JB Weld to do the same thing.

If one doesn't have easy access to a welding setup but has time to wait for JB Weld to set, would this be a decent alternative?

I've got enough thread to get one bolt on but not enough to double nut things and I've tryed vice grips and I'm just not getting the leverage. I've heated and used wax but I just don't feel like I'm getting a good enough grip on things to get them moving and thought about the nut welding option as my next method OR giving one of the Sears Stud Extractors before I resort to that.

But anyways, this thread is meant to get some of your opinions on using JB weld for the purpose of just fastening a nut on there to get the stud out.

Thanks for any advice.

JB weld is good but not that good, part of the extraction process with welding is not only a good mechanical grip on the stud but the heating process. If you can't get on it with good sharp vise grips the stud extractor may not be an improvement.

Aren't VW exhaust studs molded into the head?

no. they are in a threaded hole.

and since you're in canada, it's "M-O-U-L-D-E-D" :D

...or try threading a nut on the stud and then center punching many times the center of the stud (mushroom the stud over the nut) to lock the nut and then try unscrewing it.

But I hope you don't break the stud off in the head....

Exhaust studs are the biggest pain in the neck. One of mine broke last week. I don't know why.
After I pulled the manifold off (it's a type 4 engine with '75-'78 exhaust), I used the dremel with a long flexible shaft and a cutting disc on the end. I cut a slot in the end of the broken stud and then removed it with a screwdriver. I was lucky because it wasn't very tight.
I tried getting it out without removing the manifold but that wasn't going to happen. No way. Just aint enough room.
Also, the last time I tried double-nutting one out, I stripped the threads in the head while trying to get the second nut on. Brilliant. I know.

Possibly chisel a screwdriver slot into the stud and vicegrip the driver?

The process of exhaust removal should always go-
Soak em all in penetrating oil or a few drops of diesel for 24hrs
Heat em up with a blowtorch till roasting
Try spannerage
Repeat first 2 steps if no immediate movement
When you break it try suggestions above
Curse when they all fail
Curse some more and contemplate throwing motor/head across garage
Start over, then end up having to drill it out or put in new thread for new stud, etc etc

If you drill out the center of the bolt (cut it flat - even w/head) and try to stay in the center, you can start with a 1/8 bit and work up intil it spins right out, you only need to go in about 5/8th of an inch. Worse case drill with 21/32 bit and helicoil.

I tried jb weld... I wasted 24 hours..

My helicoil has now held for 2000 miles and still looks good. I actually bought a metric bolt ground off the head cleaned up the gummied threads and sunk it in the newly helicoiled hole so I could use the copper exhaust manilfold nuts.

with a nut in place it will be easier to center drill it if you attempt an extractor. welding is best, and since it is aluminum w/ a steel bolt, get that sucker HOT and it will come out. I mean HOT.

also a thought, super strong loctite?

All,

Just a note the Lisle Stud Extractor from Sears worked like a charm.

Removed 3 studs that I had almost lost hope for and was getting ready to go have nuts welded on.

Couldn't be happier.

Heated the things up again and used some more wax, pounded the extractor on and with some finesse had all three out in under 45 minutes.

3 weeks of frustration now over! :D
