I bought a cheapo eBay one and it was way too noisy...Couldn't stand it and shipped it back.

Ended up buying Walbro unit and its very quiet and the quality appears quite nice!

Are you guys rigging any inline Fuel pressure gauge? something in the bay perhaps? I am thinking about a backup pump, great post!
Thanks! |

Nothing new to this thread, just keeping it current.
I tried the Ford fuel pump from NAPA, and it is really noisy. I was able to get it bearable in the van only with the included insulation wrap plus another layer of foam insulation. Still loud when outside the van.
I decided to get a Bosch off Ebay:
NEW BOSCH FUEL PUMP 69414 FOR BMW, JAGUAR, PEUGEOT AND VOLKSWAGEN 1975-1993
$90 delivered priority mail, no tax (That's what the Ford pump cost me). Came in a NAPA/Bosch box.
But what really surprised me was it's made in Germany. I was led to think that all the new Boschs were Czech (which would have been fine with me). |

Interesting. I've been running the NAPA/Ford pump for 2 years now and haven't found mine noisy at all.
I do like the look of the new one you found though. If I needed a pump I'd be considering that one. |

I found this at rockauto

not sure how good it is, but for under $30, would make a good spare |

I went on ebay and ordered the same pump for $48.95 then I get an email from the seller saying they are backordered. So I go to click on the auction and they are still selling them but they raised the price to $88.95! So I am thinking they gave me a line of BS saying they were backordered but they still have them at a higher price! What a scam!!! Negative feedback coming from me. |

I got close to 2000 miles on the P37 Fuel Pump (with microsquirt); it's noisy, however, it's a 81 vanagon; the wind noise drowns the fuel pump noise.
its $30... can't go wrong. |

I must have ordered mine from these folks at the right time, got the 48 price shipped and it is tucked
away in the Westy for when needed! |

Another update.
I was unhappy with the NAPA/Ford pump (a Carter made in USA). Way too noisy.
I’d ordered a Bosch 69414 off EBay for $90 delivered (Made in Germany no less!), but hadn’t put it on yet.
TOP: Bosch - 69414
BOTTOM: NAPA/CARTER - 69100
Finally the “NAPA/Ford 69100” pump got to be too much. Driving around a campground last week scoping sites we drove all the other campers nuts with the really loud whine . . . . seriously . . . kind of embarrassing. This - even though I’d gone to lengths to insulate and isolate the pump.
Saturday I put on the Bosch unit with new rubber mounting dealies (Van Cafe). Much quieter . . . . not silent like my old Bosch original, but not really noticable.
I took a before and after video to document the noise. In the “before” you can hear the pump whine. This even with all the sound insulation and isolating the pump from the chassis (no hard connection between pump and chassis).
https://picasaweb.google.com/13VelosdeRemi/FuelPumpReplacement2#5966254995253551858
In the “After” the engine noise drowns out the pump so you can’t hear the pump. This is using the stock mounts and no insulation.
https://picasaweb.google.com/13VelosdeRemi/FuelPumpReplacement2#5966261976438661730
Lastly, NAPA now sells lists the Bosch BSH 69100 for about $85 rather than the Carter which they sold me as the 69100 (Carter P74028). So maybe folks will be happier with the Bosch unit (if it’s quieter) rather than the Carter. Both have the smaller diameter intake.
Good luck, Jed |

I'm getting ready to tackle the fuel pump replacement myself.
I just got the $50 ebay one to-thanks for the link!
Couple of questions though
1) how do you determine + and - terminals? is it OK to hook it up real quick w/out fuel running through it?
2) what are folks doing in regards to the spade connectors on the original wiring? |

The new pump terminals should be marked +/-. Turn key on and check for +12v with a multimeter (a valuable tool if you don't have one, it'll come in handy all the time and reasonably priced. Found a nice one at Sears for my son recently).
Both of the ring terminal fuel pumps I got (the NAPA/Ford and the Bosch) both came with crimp on ring connectors included. Cut off spade, strip, crimp on ring terminal. |

And before you crimp those on, make sure you have the correct one on the correct wire. They are different-sized ring terminals. Ask me how I know.

You meant snow cove and lemonsyncro...
I don't recall which was which, but they only go on the pump one way, so just check the rings on the pump before you crimp to the wires.

I was looking at those Pierburg pumps last night on autopartsway.ca. Had me a bit confused though, because they show two different models with slightly different price points. The difference was not clear to me, and I have not followed up yet. Good to know they are an excellent pump, I was not sure I was willing to pay the extra dollars for unknown benefit.

Ok guys, if you are running these alternative pumps, don't run PRE PUMP FILTERS. They will make the pump run hot, noisy, and premature failure is imminent. I was running the $30 fuel pump from rockauto.
The pump works great, as long as you don't choke it.
