I am currently replacing a cv boot on the axle and was wondering if you have to run the axle clip if you already have limiting straps on the suspension arms. Let me know and Thanks.

my sway away axles only have a spot for the outer clips which seem to be necessary but maybe not the inners

I've seen rails running bus trans , extended trailing arms leave the clips one end to get a little extra travel, but if you running stock trailing arms and stock axles, I wouldn't leave the clips off.

my 69 baja has 3 rib bus transaxle bus inner and sedan outer cv's. I think the axels are from a sedan and there is not enough room to get clip on with the bus cv. it worried me when I found it as I got the car already modified. also I dont know that this is the correct way to run this combo. but after running it hard for a year its still working.

I always use them at the transmission end of the axle but the stub axle end is optional IMHO.
The tranny end of the axle needs the clip to prevent the axle from sliding down and rubbing on the stup axle.
This will eventually booger up the splines making the CV removal very difficult.

I ground down the inner shoulders of the axle so my t2 cvs would fit with the clips. Old shool fix that Im sure weekens the axle a little but ive had no trouble in the last year. I took my time so I didnt get it to hot or take more off than I needed. Ive been told that the inner shoulder is likly to bust out the inner cage on your cvs when driven hard .Most after market axles have no inner shoulder and longer splines to allow the cv to move around a little better.

Im having the problem that i cant even get the circlip on the axle. Of course they are used circlips, but the there isnt even enough space after i have pushed the cv joint down to get the clip into the slot.

These are type 4 cv's and axles.

Any suggestions?

What kind of axles?
Stock T-1 Beetle axles?
If so, that is you issue.

T-4 CVs are wider.
Here are the common dimensions for VW CV joints.

An axle assembly (axles, stub axles and 4 cv joints) off a porsche 924, aka type 4 cv's/axles.
I broke the T4 circlips when taking the cv joints off, so i pulled the circlips off the T1 axles i have lying around. They look like the same size.

Im still using the T4 axles and T4 cv's, just using the circlips off a T1.

The circlips seem to be just a little bit too thick( like a .001").
