does a late 70's westy handle better (and move a little faster) than a early 80's air cooled vanagon?

It really depends a great deal on how they are set up.

My 79 bus does pretty well with correct tires, excellent brakes, good suspension and shocks. I would think a well set up vanagon would do about the same.

Neither of these are on par with a Porsche though. :D

Handle better? no, the vanagon has a better front end with less swaying...
a late 70's bus is quicker...

I drove an aircooled adventurewagen a little this fall, and felt that it handled much better than my '77. The vanagon had passenger tires, but the front end was so much better, it didn't matter.

I think a lot of it is going to depend on the quality of the set up that is on it and how old it is. I drove a 78 bus that handled better than any bus I have ever driven. However, I have also driven a 78 that I would not step back into, nor let my friend who bought it from me, until the steering/suspension was fixed. With a ~30 year old car, a lot will depend on maintenance and age.

all things being equal then you will find the vanogon will feel more "modern" to drive and it feels like it handles better, while the bay being lighter with the same engine is a bit quicker. But really you are splitting hairs putting it in a performance frame of mind. The vanogons without question drive more like modern cars but only when compared to a bay (or for that matter a splitty I suppose).

All of this of course, as has been stated, relies on the car being in decent condition. Any car if left to fall apart will handle and drive like shit.
