Hey guys I was wondering if some one could give me an idea of how 140hp will feel like in a 1963 Beetle with a free flyer 4th gear. I was wonderiing how it would compare say to a VW GTI.

it would probably feel a little scary, if suspension isnt up to date, n such.

Which GTi?

8v, 16v 1.8T, VR6?

Actually it's impossible to say snce any comparison is subjective.

lol its amazing.. hows that? :P

If it's 140 to the wheels it should be way faster than the GTI on the street unless the GTI is turboed.

Its will feel about twice as fast (even if slower) and twice as exciting due to the rattle noise and feeling of speed.

140hp in a bug with have a lot more power to weight that a heavy GTI

Modern cars feel slow and borring to me even with 300hp there so smooth you look at the speedo mph fly up but you dont get that rattle can excitement

Do the math. 1700 lbs/140 hp = 12.1 lbs/hp. Compare it to other cars with similar power-to-weight ratios. A new GTI (2.0T) weighs 3100 lbs and has 200 hp, which is 15.5 lbs/hp. Thus, a 63 Beetle w/ 140 hp would have a superior power-to-weight ratio as each hp is only carrying 12.1 lbs versus 15.5 for the GTI.

Stop light to Stop light, the beetle will be much faster. At highway speeds the stability of the GTI will allow faster speeds.

The Bug should be faster in the first three gears, but the GTI will catch you rapidly once you hit that freeway flyer fourth.

vw1964type1 Mon Dec 15, 2008 11:39 am

The bug should eat the GTI at pull away due to the bug's rear wheel drive config and great power to weight ratio.

The Golf struggles for traction at pull away with it's front wheel drive config even with traction control. As for top end  well by that stage you would have proved your point.

BTW If the golf has AWD it may be a different story, but we don't get the GTI in AWD here

As speed increases, so does aerodynamic drag. That drag doesn't care much about power-to-weight ratio. I think that drag will catch up to the beetle pretty quick. So the bug should be faster stop-light to stop-light, but that's about it.

Fine, once you're at the end of 3rd, you've already won.
Then the GTI passes you, and he gets the speeding ticket, not you

Pretty much what I wanted to say. If I want to beat GTI ass on top end I just get into the SLK

it will feel like a soda can with a few nuts and washers being launched out of a spud cannon , at least until the clutch takes a dump. but the fun factor would be worth it .
keep on buggin

It depends, if engine is stock stroke 140hp 1776/1914, or a 140hp stroker 2007/2110 =)

Probably healthy 2110 with 40x35,5 heads, W110/120 cam and 2x40 drlas would be torque monster.

Here is a 151hp recept from John Maher:

ENgine 2276cc
Cam Engle FK10
Carbs Weber 44 IDF x 2
Heads CB 044 (40 x 35.5mm)
Compression ratio 8.5:1
Max BHP 151.07 @ 5900rpm
Max Torque 156.1 ftlbs @ 5000rpm
Ring & Pinion 4.37
Gear Ratios 3.80/2.06/1.26/.89
0 - 60mph 5.0 secs
1/4 mile 13.7 @ 94.8mph

It will walk any stock GTI in the 1/4 like it was standing still.
Now this is one GTI I would want to drive!

WOW!!!! That pretty much puts the point across. My daily driver is a Acura NSX. If the beetle can keep up with it up to 60mph. I would be more then happy. I wanna make a street car with some power, when I need it, not a full out race car.
