anyone have some input on these for a stock 1600dp ?
..as in would they work..what else would I need...are they worth a damn...what would be the best location on the valve covers to install them...... and would there be any real benefits to using them ?

They arent needed for a stock 1600. It would be a waste of time. If you're getting blowby, use a thinner oil.

Bigger engines require the valve covers vented due to much more extreme pressures inside.

Reviving an old post.

I have a 1641 DP that I am adding dual carbs to. These dual carbs are Kadrons that used to be on my Beetle's 1776 DP. The valve cover over #3 and #4 had a breather vent with a line to a breather box. I have seen plenty of motors with dual carbs that do not have this, and I understand it is more useful in bigger motors.

Should I vent my valve cover on this 1641DP?

Any advice is appreciated.

Tom

I'm guessing a 1641 is not enough increase in size to warrant a breather vent in the valve cover.

If you have worn rings you may need. Think of it like this 2% of a 1600cc is alot less air than 2% of 2276cc. What the stock can take, depends.

I was like you breather boxes, hoses, for just in case situations.

I had those fittings to a breather box and after a year realized I had very little if any blowby. I have a 2.0 914 T-4 in my bug and have been running a single hose from the crankcase stock location to one of my Duel 36 Dells, no problem. No holes in the valve covers, no extra hoses -----

I see no reason not to vent the case. but be sure those seal good and the inner holes are bigenough. and that you put them in the right place's

Odd that the 3/4 side was the one vented. Seems conventional wisdom is if anything vent the 1/2 side.

Yea mike, some people are Bassackwards
Hell ,I don't even vent my VC's ,2110cc in the bus

The best place to vent any motor is at the highest point , if the case is vented correctly in my experience ther is no need for more venting ..

mark tucker Fri May 20, 2016 11:01 am

I dont get the convential wizdom...both of my v/c's are vented with zero issues. and vented up high.

Eaallred Fri May 20, 2016 9:06 pm

I stopped venting valve covers.

It's not the source of the crankcase pressure, the case is. Add better crankcase ventilation, and you can leave the valve covers alone.

nope. Not worth squat, not even as raw materials.
no barbs, holes too small, and valve covers don't have flat spots. So what did they get right?
The right thing to do is machine or buy a thinwall steel barb and weld it on. Unless you have aluminum covers, then you'd be more likely to go with pipe thread, or just tap the heqad in the OE breather location.
I don't think you need two, just one should be fine.
On a stock 1600? heck no, just don't remove the stock breather and replace it with crap like this.

I machined barbs on a set, worked fine, also opened the id up some. but I like pipe threads better.....nylon ones at that.

VW vented the rocker boxes on DJet fuel injected Type 4 engines. The difference is that they routed clean air from the air cleaner to the rocker boxes, pulled it thru the Pushrod tubes, and out the top of the crank case thru a one way valve. Fresh air entering the rocker boxes kept them very clean. Just something to consider.

That's a PCV system, different than just a breather system
