fram hp1 comes with berg oil kit, I looked up the specs on fram and the literature says they have a 500lb burst strength, but I remember reading that fram filters may have a bursting problem?? JL |

I've had Fram PH8A's bust open but not HP1's.

You burst an HP1 and you have far more serious issues than filter failure. |

It's not that they burst, it the insides are junk. The same crappy paper element as in the PH8A. |

I use Motorcraft and K&N filters when I can - I use Fram PH8As for cam break in, and that's it. |

I use the Fram HP-1 but had one come apart at the rolled over seam at the top once. Lost about 4 quarts before I realizied what happened and shut down.
However, I did leave a 60 foot trail down the driveway of my employers 11 million dollar (1998 dollars) house.
Thank God it was on blacktop and not on the Belgian block.
It's still visible after 2 years, but he doesn't know I did it!
I still worry when I buy an HP-1. What is an alternative? |

We all know that you would probably use a Canton or something and then throw the whole thing away...but some of us are realistic. I like to use very low weight oil for break in, and never worry about the pressure issues. I want lots of flow from the very beginning, and even a PH8A will work for 20 minutes at 2000 RPM, Mr. Spendy! |

I went to the WIX website and found the following cross references:
WIX 51515R
Fram HP-1
K&N 07-0008
Motorcraft FL1HP
Moroso 22470
Other than WIX and Fram has anyone used the others? |

The Purolator "Pure One" is probably the best disposable commercially avaliable filter out there. IIRC, about 400 square inches of filter media inside it vs. about 170 square inches of filter media in the Fram filter. Nobody touches the Fram for surface area, and the build quality is awesome. 9300rpm's on mine and never burst one yet. |

Get the "Pure One" version of that filter and you'll be doing even better. :)
When Purolator still had a plant here in Salt Lake City, I got a tour with my boss by the guy running it. It was pretty cool to see how it was all done. Purolator really is one of the best choices out there for disposable spin-on's. |

looks a little gimmicky. purolator's site claims a 96% filtration rate for the premium plus filters and 99% for the pure one. looks nice, though. got the grippy shit on it.
do they make the l39001 in a pure one? a cursory web search couldn't find one |

Actually, it's a PL30001. I just got a fresh one Saturday.
I almost missed it on the shelf. They used to be blue and the new one is a sand-colored. Weird.

K&N's are nice, I will agree... I'm currently running the NAPA equivalent, no issues to speak of. I would, if I had the bucks, like to get the Geers Engineering set up, so I could clean it repeatedly rather than chuck a filter at each oil change. |
