I use a CTEK charger to charge the battery. I've installed it as an "on board" charger. This kind of charger allows me to draw power from the battery while charging, without actually draining the battery.
When the vehicle is parked (like it is now, for the last few months) the charger is keeping the batteries in good condition.
That way, all the electrical equipment in the camper is 12V, no need for 220V equiment (well, there is a hair dryer for the ladies, but that's it)

One thing you should consider, is the fact that this is a 220V-12V charger... I don't know if there is a 110V version...

that's an original westy converter.

find the westfalia circuit diagram, it's online somewhere. those old westy converters are pretty problematic however. many of them i see are non-operational now.
