I doubt if they are made anymore. I think that ad was from back 80's.

The video looks so old I would say if they were produced, they arn't anymore. Would be a DIY project.

Back in the 70's or 80's Popular Mechanics magazine had a full set of plans for building one of these VW Bug Campers.

Someone should dig thru the magazine archives in the basement and post the plans....

BTW: I'm SHOCKED that there were No Comments on that guy's shirt lapels in the 5th Wheel video?!? Major 70's FlashBack!!

That's just the Channel logo overlayed on the video.

Will this thing never die??

69bugboy76 Thu Aug 13, 2009 9:58 pm

keep it going long enough,& someone's bound to find out how to get one...

I'd love to build one, the only thing would be to try and figure out how to recreate that funky swivel hitch. maybe a hub bearing assembly from a truck could be modified? perhaps bolt a thick steel plate (3/8'?, 1/2''?) to the hub, and another to the back, and then weld it to a baja cage, maybe bolt as well for extra security. and the top pate, could have holes drilled for the lug nuts, to secure it, and could be drilled in the center for a ball, and two more holes for the safety chains. just a thought. not sure how legal this would be, or even if a hub bearing would even work (lugs not strong enough , etc.)?

and the trailor could be made from scratch or, an existing one could be modified (hack the front off, and fabricate the rest).

danfromsyr Thu Oct 29, 2009 8:43 pm

the hitch is just a standard tow ball and coupler. they'll pivot 360.

as for making one from scratch, maybe use the back end of a Bay bus ;-)

*hmmm, the possibilities.

but how would i hook up safety chains? i thought the whole thing pivoted, to allow the chains to pivot along with it?

BugMan114 Thu Oct 29, 2009 9:00 pm

ok, wow. it just occured to me that the safety chains could simply be unhooked from the frame before you park it, or do 360's, and then rehooked while driving, lol. brainfart i guess, hahaha.

I was looking through a copy of the March/April 1974 issue of Volkswagen Greats, and there was a blurb about this trailer.

Quote: International Travel Trailer Inc., introduces a revolutionary travel trailer. First in the Alpha Omega line, the El Chino model is made for use with small domestic and imported cars. It has a patented vehicle/trailer hitching system which allows 360 degree mobility of the car with respect to the trailer. Mounting the adjustable hitch across the roof at the center point evenly distributes the weight over all four wheels of the car and eliminates sway, floating and jack-knife effects. For more information write to International Travel Trailer, Inc., Dept. VWG Country Rd. 40, PO Box 591, Wakarusa, IN 46573.

I have tried finding this company in business or not and no luck.

Anyone heard or seen anything about this?

Know anyone that has one, seen one, or can get plans to one?

Indiana guys?????

How would the wiring for the trailer lights be handled?

Fish Wed Feb 10, 2010 5:58 pm

The same way as the safety chains unless......... you wnat to design a couple of disks with seprated contact rings that you wire to and they lay the disks on top of each other (with the contact rings touching) around the ball. It could be done, but why?
