On the way home this evening I heard what is like a metallic (clank- not loud) coming from the engine bay. When I pulled into the garage, i popped the decklid, and heard the noise as a slight (not constant) almost like something rattling loose. I shut off the engine and it got louder- when the pulley shut down. I restarted it, and got my wife to turn it off again- while trying to see where it was coming from. It seems to be coming from the crank pulley area. I am not sure what it could be- as I didn't hear this until this evening and I just had the valves, timing, and points adjusted last Thursday.

Any chance a screw or something dropped into the pulley well and is stuck behind it?

mynameismud Mon Jun 02, 2008 3:15 pm

nope - nothing stuck or dropped into the pulley well. it's not a whining metallic (like a spun pulley). Belt is fine, not frayed, not loose and this is a recent development- as I drove it Friday to and from work, back out to dinner with the wife, back downtown and home again Sat. To Lowes, etc. then Sunday on a quick errand- So, probably 120+ miles this weekend.

Take your fan off and start the enigne. That will possiobly rule out the generator or fan.
It might be that the washer/slinger behind the pulley is not tight and clanging around. The pulley is supposed to sandwich the washer against the crank.

Maybe the tin behind the pulley rubbing?

Sounds like a loose flywheel.........check it out..............clanking at the pulley usually turns out to be a loose flywheel. Also explains why it is worse when you shut down...........If you catch it in time you can grind the crank back down flat and 8 dowel it and save it. I just did it on a car I recently turned..............sounded like the front pulley too.

not too long ago I had a similar sound coming out of my engine, turned out to be the generator bearings.

coincidentally this weekend I had a strange sounding coming from the rear as I was driving, couldn't find it while stopped, I had lost a hub cap clip and it was rattling around inside the cap.

I am getting so dayum tired of pulling the engine- I'm probably up to 8 within' this past year, since I got the bus up and running.

The first thing that you want to do is pull and push on the crankshaft pulley to see if the end play has increased. If it has, remove the engine and remove the flywheel, then remove the seal; see if a shim has disentegrated, and see if the main bearing is snug between the case halves.

pushed and pulled on the pulley- no movement. i can turn the pulley by hand.

Do like Jeremy said and take off the fan belt and run it.
That will tell you whether it is crank or gen/fan.

yah- thats next on the list- its pouring and i dont need my ass in the rain..

Let us know what you find. It's good to save a note for future reference.

With the storms / tornados coming thru Indiana last evening- it may have to wait a while. This a.m. when I was leaving for work- lightening struck a block over..scared the crap out of me.. A few mins. later fire trucks, police and ambulances were in the area- supposidly, someone got struck.

Of course, everyone has you ready to pull the motor when it could be as simple as just the two bolts behind the pulley that hold the tin in place have come loose.

Start the bus, let it idle, crawl around to the back and take a long flat screwdriver and push on the bottom of the pulley tin, towards the case, right where there is a little notch for oil to drain out. See if that doesnt make it stop or at least alter the noise.

people say Quote: take off the fan belt and run it

But not too long, of course.

Wouldnt hurt to move the fan shroud back and forth as well see if the fan is rubbing.
