Been a while since I did any work on a volkswagen, and I'm having issues with a fuel pump. Just bought a replacment, and while I was at it, pulled the fuel tank to clean it out. Got the tank clean and moved the fuel filter from the engine compartment to below the tank. I put enough gas in the tank to make sure fuel was flowing through the filter. Also checked the rest of the line to make sure it was clear, since it's been re-routed under the car by a PO.
Everything else is hooked back up, but I get no flow through the new pump. Lines are correct, and I did make sure I'm getting suction through the pump. By actuating the pump and blocking the fittings, the pump holds pressure.
There's only about 3 gal in the tank, but surely that's enough to get it going. I didn't want to add more in case I had to pull the tank again. A little gas in the carb, and the car starts up, but still no luck with the pump. Think of anything I might have missed?? |

Jack the front of the car up. Pull the fuel tank line off the pump. Gas should be coming out. If not, you have a problem between the tank and the pump. |

Check your carb float. It may be that the pump is fine, but not able to get past the float valve to fill the carb bowl. Also check the fuel solenoid valve on the carb; if they fail they cut out fuel flow.
Fuel pumps are positve displacement pumps with the tank above the suction inlet. They do not require priming to operate if everything else is working right. |

Got it figured out. The fuel filter wasn't allowing enough flow. Yanked the filter out and it fired right up. Thinking I'm just going to stay with the sock in the tank. |
