View original topic: Antique License Plate Question
dbspeed Sun Apr 27, 2008 5:50 am

I recently applied for a Pennsylvania antique plate which looks like this http://www.plateshack.com/y2k/Pennsylvania3/pa-antique.jpg very modern IMO. I always remember growing up "The Purple" style like this http://www.papl8s.com/stamp_files/ANTIQUE11.jpg

My question if I find the old one can it be recertified by the DMV to be used? I have heard other states doing this. Thanks for you help.

P.S. If you know anyone selling these purple PA vintage plates please email me [email protected] I searched the Classifieds here but no luck.

Thanks!!!

First contact your state DMV and as them about YOM (Year of Manufacture) plates.

Second try ebay or local car show swap meets for plates.

i did not see any info on YOM plates in pa. also haven't seen any cars with one. most run a period plate ont he front. but best to call and find out for sure. besides, doesn't matter for us dune buggy owners...we can't have antique, classic or even collectible plates

there was a show that i forgot to take the tag off for when i left. cop followed me and everything and never noticed i guess. hey, its an authentic '73 registration! 8)

To my knowlege, PA has no provision for YOM plates, or any interest in letting people use older plates. Once they used up the supply of the purple plates, the new style started. The only thing I found about re-issuing plates applies to vanity, and that said if the plate had not been regertered in 5 or more years, then the state would re-issue. Now that doesn't mean you can use an old plate, they will make a new one with that phrase on it. Just about all PA plates now are the new blue white yellow type, even on ambulances and such. The only way you'd be able to run a purple plate legally these days, is if you already have a car with one, or you buy a car with a purple antique registration, and pay the fee to transfer the plates.

X2 Swap meets have the better deal over ebay.

No offense to the good people of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, but that is one ugly license plate.

The car looks like something out of a 1976 JC Whitney catalog, and what's up with the Visa Card look?

I agree, this is one crappy looking tag. I miss the purple plates too. I had this same tag (the Visa looking job) on my Westy and hated it, but didn't want regular registration.

db,

There is a weekend flea market not far from your town with a steady dealer who has a fantastic collection of YOM plates.

He is located in the little market shacks on the right side of the market. He keeps the plates in boxes on the ground under his tables.

Take 100 south to the ice cream stand on the left, merge right onto 29 / 422?
Go about 12 miles west twords Pottsgrove / Reading, look for the market on your left.

I bought a 56 and 57 YOM in very good condition for $5 each.

I have been running the 57 YOM on my oval for the last three years. I keep the blue / white plate under the seat in case I get stopped. No problems yet.

How are you running it if the reg has a different plate number on it?

The only time that i have ever been stopped by the police was when a state trooper in Blakslee wanted a closer look.

I showed hime the "regular plate" from under the seat and never had any issues.

If you have an antique plate, doesn't that mean you can only drive it on weekends, holidays, and during or to and from a parade or show?

zdub Sat Aug 09, 2008 10:24 am

The state trooper told me that 1,200 miles per year is the maximum allowed.

I never drive the oval anywhere near that much in a year.

Now that I think about it, how would the police know what my year to year milage is??
