The last mention of a Fridolin (type 147) was here in 2010, unfortunately without a photo- &Dan wrote: Fridolin sighting in the last portion of John Le Carre's Smiley's People series.
Here's another Frid- German TV crime drama series "Der Kommissar", filmed in the Munich Germany area. "Fluchtwege" (escape routes) S4E9, 1972. The BMW is an 1800 from the 1960's "Neue Klasse" (new class) generation. |

Another cinema classic with all star cast. There are at least 5 VWs just in the opening credits. Go ahead watch this and you too can be a Hippy 😀gas grass or ass nobody rides for free. The scene in the salvage yard shows at least another dozen VWs. A couple of the songs are obvious ripoffs of Jimi Hendrix. The ending is the best shot in and around San Francisco. Anyone can stream this directly off YouTube.

I skimmed through 5 of the 6 episodes of this 1982 British miniseries last night and found the Frid, in episode 5. It's a Swiss Postal vehicle. This segment takes place in the city of Thun, Switzerland which is south of Bern. Thun is pronounced "toon" in Swiss German.
Distance shot of the Frid on the left, with the Bernese Alps in the background looking south.
I found the bottom photo's location on GoogleMaps, at the Maulbeerkreisel (mulberry roundabout) by the Aare River. https://www.google.com/maps/@46.756466,7.6300291,3...312!8i6656 |

British TV documentary "The Doors are Open" from 1968 about the rock band The Doors, mixes brief shots of various cars getting hit as Jim Morrison performs a slow, typical mournful song. A pre-Zwitter Split window Beetle is about to get hit, as seen from the inside of the onrushing car. |

Based on how it is sitting in the back, I'd say it has no engine in it to make it easier to get into the air. That is standard practice. |

'74 Super Beetle in TV show "MythBusters". The show hosts Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman drive a heavy dump truck through a "traffic jam" of cars to try to prove or disprove the movie effects of displacing the cars. Episode "Hollywood Car Crash Cliches", season 12 episode 3, 2014. In the first attempt, the team welds an additional bumper/crash guard to the front of the truck. The Beetle is positioned in between other cars and is bumped hard.
In the second attempt, a modified, tapered style "cow catcher" is installed which proves much more effective for clearing away the cars. The Beetle is now at the front of the row.

From 2004:
dan baldwin wrote: great opening scene in THE SHINING as camera swoops over lake and mountain and Jack Nickolson cruising up to the Overlook hotel in a yellow beetle with haunting music n all......
Amazingly there has not been any photos of the opening scenes posted... so here we go. This was Stanley Kubrick's horror film, starring Jack Nicholson (correctly spelled) as Jack Torrance. In the opening scenes, Torrance is driving a yellow '73 Beetle along the incredibly scenic road to his "Colorado" mountain hotel interview for the winter season caretaker. IMBD lists the road as Going to the Sun Road in Glacier National Park in Montana. These were taken from a helicopter so that the first one was a bit tilted; I mostly leveled it out.
Also from 2004:
69calibug wrote: I almost forgot one. In "The Shining", besides the obvious bug, when the groundskeeper is driving up to the hotel in a snowstorm, theres a Beetle vert under a tipped semi in the accident scene. I love that creepy movie.
As seen by the hotel's chef Dick Hallorann (Scatman Crothers) who is driving past.

I just posted this in the "Old movies with Split Busses" thread. Yellow "hippie bus" in animated commercial for Breztri inhaler, early March 2022. First saw it on TV tonite, then found a lesser-quality version on YouTube. Looks like details were done well, with the rear wheelwell shape appearing to be '63 or older. |
