Is there a service for old cars like car fax that can trace our old vehicles back to see a history of ownerships using the vin#?

Never seen anything like that. Remember most older car all had paper records.

I believe that CarFax only works with post 1984 cars to begin with. Also, as I remember, the VIN only appeared on cars around 1968, so tracing the repair history of any pre-VIN numbered car would be very difficult at best.

VIN numbers are 17 charectors long and began in 1980 Carfax only works from 80 up........ Before that its 50 state DMV like searching for a needle in a haystck....... Athough its very naughty and against law some vehicles have had ID plates switched and its common to see VWs with different numbered pans and bodies...... oh my :)

VIN numbers have been on cars all along. They just werent on the dash, like you are thinking.
They ave always been under the rear seat on bugs, since forever. And that is the legal one BTW. Not the one on the dash or by the spare tire.
