I just purchased some VDO gauges for the bus and can't decide where to mount them. I bought the VDO safety (rubber underdash) mount, but don't really like the way it looks or the angle it's at. I was thinking about cutting some holes in my dash (between the radio and the ashtray) and mounting them there or possibly one of the dashtop pods. Any thoughts on these locations, especially in the dash. Anybody have pictures of these setups? |

The spot between the radio and the ashtray is a good spot. A friend of mine as a cylinder head temp and oil pressure located there and it looks great! |

On my '69 Westy, I put a large VDO tach in the blank gauge beside the speedo (where the optional clock would be installed to the right of the speedo). I then used a doorknob drill bit to cut the ~2" hole for a VDO (small) oil temp gauge just below the radio and above the ashtray as I recall (I sold the vehicle last year, so I know it was place below the radio for sure). I think there is room to drill for about three small VDO's below the radio.
The drill worked great, giving a nice clean hole through the dash rubber, foam and sheet metal, with no ripping of material around it. |

Another option, if ya dont want to drill the dash is to pull the radio, and mount the gauges where the radion was, and install the radion (stereo) in the glove box, or under the dash. |

I put mine where the radio was. I believe that Bus Boys has a three hole aluminum adapter ($18 or $21) that will fill the radio hole and allow for three of the 2 1/8" gauges to be mounted there. It is a very clean looking installation and the viewing angle is very good.
Go to http://www.geneberg.com/ and take a look at what he has to say about gauges.
P.S. Not having a radio makes it a lot easier to hear the engine and any strange/potentially costly noises! |

I cut some round holes under the radio area and put them there. Just make sure you center them! |
