I need to have my '78 emissions tested this year for plate renewal.
The stardards are 500 ppm Hydrocarbons and 5.0% CO2. I'm running a 13.0:1 fuel ratio. Would leaner be better or sightly rich. Anyone with expericence on the subject?
ThanksΩ

I didn't know Indiana had any emissions testing. Must be Porter County and more towards Chicago? LaPorte County doesn't require any testing and I hope it stays that way because I'm not sure my vans would pass Good luck,

For HC and CO, it's pretty much the leaner the better. Just make sure you dial it back after the test so you don't overheat your heads.

they dont test cars older than 81 here in southern indiana.

Lake and Porter Counties are the only 2 left. Goes all the way back to 1976 vehicles. I'm in Porter County.

Hey vwman,

I don't have an answer for you, but I think I saw you in Valpo yesterday near Best Buy/ Target, etc. around noonish. Nice bus!

As an aside, I'm still on the prowl for an engine. Keep your eyes open! 8)

Lean will drop your HC and the CO will drop to a point. If you go too lean on HC, the CO will climb dramatically.

Emissions for Lake and Porter? And not rest of state? That's stupid.

Boone Grove HS, class of '86! Go Wolves!
Saw Robbie Hummel play when they (Valpo) kicked our ass 2 years ago. Guy's got game!

I'm in the next county over. He could just sign the title over to me. Problem solved!

Probably because of the proximity to Chicago and Lake Michigan, and the fact that those counties are very industrialized. Not to mention the high traffic volumes along 94 and the toll road.

Just keep LaPorte County out of it!

Redd73 Fri Feb 15, 2008 11:41 am

yeah we got it down here because they got it across the river in louisville. then they stopped it in louisville. im not sure if they stopped over here or not.

they stopped in louisville beacuse they found out only about a very tiny fraction of the vehicles on the road that were required to be tested failed. it was a waste of time and money. also taken into consideration was the large amount of n/s traffic from out of state on 65 and the amount of e/w interstate traffic on 64. those are polluters not being tested.

The emissions program in the 2 counties is tied to Federal funds for I80/I94 maintainace. No testing, no money.

Poptop, I think that was me that you saw thursday. I was over that way around noon or so on my way back from Michigan City.

Hey Garry, I managed to get around emissions testing on my 96 Aerostar work car. All you do is plate as a truck. It costs an extra 80 bucks but NO TESTING. The best part is you only have to do it every other year. on the inbetween years you can plate it regular.

That's interesting about getting it plated as a truck.

I didn't realize that both of you had orange busses with white tops! Nice to see one out on the road this time of year. You have a steal your face sticker in the middle of your back hatch glass?

As you should. Hope to be showing mine sometime soon!lol

I wasn't aware of the emissions specs here in Indiana, either. If the bus is still fuel injected, you can dial in the air flow meter to get good readings and lean it out.

how often do you have to be inspected?

themarshotel7 Sat Feb 16, 2008 12:07 pm

Every other year.

Vwman55 Sat Feb 16, 2008 12:12 pm

Testing is every 2 years. 1976 is the last year for testing right now. Anything older then that doesn't need testing. It is only Lake and Porter counties. There used to be a 3rd county but its no longer listed. Somewhere down south?

Mark: there was just a write up in the paper about the "loop hole", I believe it said that they had closed it or are working on closing it.

This was the year that I did not need emissions on that vehicle so I went back to regular plates....saved 80 bucks. If i were you , i would go down to the BMV and give it a shot. I saw that article to but I dont think it has been closed yet.
