Hi Bill,

I disagree. On the 62 and previous, YOM plates, the single year sticker on the plate reflects the year of the car/registration. From 63 forward with the black background/yellow letters, the stickers (two) reflects the month and year of registration expiration. This is how the DMV has worked with me on my 56, which does not need a sticker for the YOM orange background black letter - KAG 274 plate - as the plate is stamped with 56. I just renewed the registration for this car, and, the stickers, month and year, are not attached to the plate, but hang off the sides on metal tabs that the DMV provided. (If my car was a 57, then a sticker for 1957 year would be affixed directly to the plate in addition to the re-registration two on the sides - the pre 62 practice would only consist of the year sticker on the plate - 1957 - indicating valid registration for the calendar year of 1957). The month and year stickers that the DMV gave me for re-registration are also different for the YOM plates as it indicates on the stickers CA PYR meaning California - Partial Year Registration - that is, the registration is good for a year, but not the calendar year - only to month indicated by the tag for the following year, hence partial year....

However, my 67 vert, which has always been registered with the California black background/yellow letters - VIM 268 - carries a sticker (actually again - two, month and year) that reflects the month/ year the registration expires. The tags are attached directly on the plate and the year tag carries the designation CA ACTM which means California - Auto, Commercial, Trailer, Motorcycle.

What I did on my 66 bus, which has a custom plate - 19BUS66 - was to get a 66 tag and hang it off to the side to emphasize 66. This is my personal preference. The plate per se has month and year of registration expiration, again, the year with the ACTM designation.

For our friend, who we are trying to assist here, it is a personal preference. He could probably attach a 68 sticker to the side to emphasize 68, as I have done on my 66 with the "real" month and year stickers on the plate. His original registration year sticker would have been 69 however.

Lived in California since 64, this is the way I remember it. The DMV lady was very clear on all of these points and the pulling of the tags as I was reregistering multiple cars.

Cheers

Why did it take that long? Seems like an easy task with the regi as proof.

It was easy with mine, stepped up with the renewal requests from the DMV and a check, all three were done in less than an hour.

it took that long because it sat in the desert for 25 years. luckily there was an old registration that matched the plates.

I know that this is a little off topic but it has to do with license plates in California. I today custom ordered license plates for my car. I got (BUG 1956). It was the only combination of 1956 and a VW term that was available in California. I just had to tell someone.

Reviving an old thread as its the only one I found partially referencing my question, see bold parts above.

Does anyone know if the PYR tags are only issued for the first year of YOM for California 56 Yellow plates? I was originally issued PYR stickers from Sacramento and when I renewed the registration in SoCal, I was issued regular ACTM tags. I found it odd and have searched the DMV sites and other threads but no info on this.

I also have been calling Sac DMV "special plate division" number but have been unsuccessful in getting someone to actually pick up or provide an answer.

PYR (Partial Year Registration) tags are no longer issued or used by the California DMV. Tags now are ACTM (Auto, commercial, trailer, motorcycle). This was revised about two years ago.

Thanks for the quick reply and good to know.

Oddly enough, my 2010 stickers were/are still PYR [month & year] which is still active and doesnt expire until March. Maybe they are still phasing out the to the ACTM which I just got for 2011 [year only].

My month sticker is still PYR so it looks like I may have to request an ACTM month sticker to match the year.

Thanks again!

Clipped the majority of the paragraph, but the question I have is about the "Clear" plates..

When at Kelly Park this past spring folks were selling plates that were "Cleared"

I am considering a set from elsewhere

how would you know that?

Would I have to have the number and go to DMV (I am in CA)?

Exactly, give the dmv a call, and tell them you have a set of yom's you are looking to buy and you want to make sure they are clear. If you are able to actually get a human on the other end of the line, they should be able to tell you right on the spot if they are clear or not.

I was at the Redlands DMV this past week with two YOM registrations to process. The first set was 1956 commercial plates with 1957 sticker. The clerk never even looked at the second plate when she processed them. It was pretty rough while the top plate with the sticker was pretty good.

The second transaction did not work out as well. When I first purchased my oval seven years ago I switched the yellow on black 1963 plates to the the black on yellow YOM plates no sticker required.I kept the 1963 plates. I wanted to go back to the original yellow and black on the oval and the clerk would not allow it to happen even though I had 23 years worth of registrations showing the 1963 plates belonged to the car... and I still had the plates.

That's interesting. I have a couple of cars that were registered in CA and I now have them registered in AZ. I still have the YOM plates and I have been thinking about re-registering them back in CA as I now have a summer residence there. Did they give you a reason why?

Regards,
Jim

I got a verbal response which was they can only register cars to their correct YOM plate colors. I was asking them to register a 1956 car to 1963 plates. I suspect that if I paid one of the registration services I could probably get it done...

Ya, that wont fly with the DMV. The year of the plates, and or sticker must match the year of the car. As far as the registration service goes, all the ones I have used in the past were just as strict as the DMV, and had their books ready to tripple check everything. But who knows, maybe you will find one that would be willing to hook you up.

When I went to my local DMV a month or so ago to register my 57 bug, I asked about putting YOM plates on it as I have a set of 56 black on yellow plates. These plates were off an old model t and they said I just needed to bring the pair in to make sure they match.(I only brought 1) And they also said I will be charged a "personalized plate" charge on my registration each year. That was it. I didn't do it at the time, but now that reg. fees have dropped....
