I need opinions on who makes the best single stage enamel , regardless of cost. I like a single stage finish better than clearcoat. Paint must be able to withstand color sanding and buffing if needed. Please give company and Series name and approximate cost per gallon. Thanks |

is there a reason that you want enamel instead of urethane? |

PPG Delstar Acrylic Enamel with the DXR 80 Urethane Gloss hardner additive has always been my favorite. Although I have had pretty much the same results( application) with Dupont Centauri and Sherwin Williams brand equivalent products. IMO the PPG holds up better.
Delstar has gotten really high now though... approx 160 a gallon, 80 for the hardener and 30 or so for the gallon of reducer.
Check their site to find a certified PPG dealer near you and you can call and check prices... it varies depending on color...

Either or...... it seems companies use these terms interchangably now |

Uh... not really... Acrylic enamel ( even with the urethane hardner) continues to "flow" out for several days as the solvents gas off ( that nice new paint smell that lingers for several days even weeks when you use it)
AE with the urethane hardner as mentioned above gives you advantages of easy of spray and flow and the hardness/toughness of urethane finish.
Urethane alone sprays nice but really cures fast due to it's catalyst makeup.
Where are you seeing the terms being used "interchangably"? |

Keifer, The people working in the paint stores (clerks) who probably have never seen a car painted, use these terms interchangably....both Dupont and PPG outlets. I have been involved in building some fine cars over the years and continue to be amazed today at how little the people know about the product they are selling....thanks for the information |

for bang for your buck i recently tried Nason Fleethane and must say i really liked it. reminded me of the OLD Dupont Imron form back in the day before it was reformulated(mid90s or so). i've used the hell out of Nason's clears for years over just about every brand of paint. it's cheap and it's good stuff. bought a quart of fleethane to do some interior trim work with and i think i'm gonna shoot the whole car in it now. it's a daily driver not a show car so i'm not looking for "the worlds deepest shine" but i must say for stray out of the gun it's got a REAL NICE shine. and i think a full gallon hardener and reducer is less than $200. probably would be fine with 3 quarts but since it took them a bit to get the formula for sand green i'd rather have that extra quart sitting around for now.
i also have to say i was totally unimpressed with all of teh free PPG Omni products i was given to try. in fact i gave half of it way to someone else to try and he wasn't impressed at all either...ken.... |

yes, i've used the nason ful-thane and it lays down very nice. it will not really hold up too well to colorsanding though. very thin. most cheaper single stage paints have the consitency of water even before you reduce them. pick up a can of ppg concept and it is like a milkshake. |

Ahh, the good ol days when Duponts "Chromaone" covered in like two coats. I did use alot of PPG's CLV single stage with great results. Duponts Chromaone is slightly reformulated now but i hear it still works nice. |

If you going "either or" then go with acrylic urethane. I like PPG Concept. |

PPG Concept Single Stage Urethane Dove Blue 1955 Kombi:
PPG Delstar Single Stage Acrylic Enamel Pearl White 1967 Kombi:
Concept is considerably more difficult to spary- it flows out better in my opinion with exceptional gloss...
Delstar is still more affordable, but not like ten years ago. It is somehwhat forgiving in the spraying department, but a nice gloss and depth still requires a skilled hand. It's much easier to maintain!! It resembles a more original finish and I LOVE this stuff, but always end up using the Concept on customer cars. |

PPG Delstar AE with DXR 80 Additive... This color is the result of 3 other colors of metallic I had left over from painting various other "non VW" models... Some of the paint had been on the shelf for years but it mixed and shot just like a fresh gallon.
more pics in my gallery I just loaded these up yesterday. |
